Tex Mex is one of my favorite foods - top 5 for sure. I don't often have it eating out but it's a strong influence in my own style of cooking. So, not very often.

The best Tex-Mex I've ever had was someplace just outside of Houston on my way to New Orleans more than a decade ago.
Tex-Mex, especially in KC, has been all to disappointing to me. I used to LOVE Annie's Sante Fe when I was in high school, but it's long gone. Jose Peppers and On The Border are awful. I'd rather have frozen food. There is absolutely NO Tex-Mex where I live. Just hand made tortillas (both flour and corn), seasoned skirt steak, chicken and pork. The flavors are absolutely amazing. Spiced ground beef pales in comparison. With that said, if someone can direct me to good to excellent Tex-Mex in KC, I'd greatly appreciate it. We're visiting sometime this fall and I'd like my wife to finally enjoy it. |

Correct. On The Border is terrible. But, you need to try Jose Peppers outside of Lee's Summit. For some reason, the LS location is vastly inferior to others. Drive out to Olathe to their Jose Peppers. That's the best one.

It's a bummer because I'm friends with the original owners and had several friends work there in the 80's (including my brother and sister in law). It just seems like the quality has dropped substantially. Either that or I remember it being much better and my memory doesn't match reality. |

Tex-Mex is awesome. We (me and the wife) make our own Tex-Mex. Spicy.

IMO, Tex-Mex hides the flavor and is too "Americanized" (Don Bell founded the first Taco Bell in the 1950's and was the first guy to deep fry a corn tortilla and sell it in a drive thru restaurant). True Mexican food is far more complicated, whether it's Oaxacan or Baja or from Mexico City. Mole's and guacamole and fish tacos and mariscos are far more interesting than refried beans, cheddar cheese and "spicy " hamburger. |
