If Bowe Wants Megatron Money
Let's say, as has been rumored, that Bowe is genuinely looking for Megatron money.
Now, in case you've been living under a rock, Megatron got a seven year deal worth $134 million dollars, with $60 million guaranteed. It is the biggest contract in NFL history. You are Scott Pioli, and you've got 'til July to get him signed to avoid paying him a $9 million franchise tag this year. You probably don't want to tag him for two straight years, as (a.) he's saying he's going hold out until you do sign him, and (b.) Branden Albert will be a free agent next year if you do. Trading is also an option, but no team in the NFL wanted him for a 1st rounder when you tried to trade him during the draft's first day, if you believe those rumors. No team wanted to burn a 1st on Mike Wallace, either. So you're not getting a first if you try to trade him. Explain the process by which you try to resolve this issue, all you Piolis out there. Are you going to give him the contract he wants? Or close? What is his contract worth to you? How do you intend on getting him down to that? Are you going to try to trade him? What are you going to trade him for? I know we're all going to love criticizing Pioli for whatever he does here, but it'd help if you outline what YOU'D do in his shoes. Because this could potentially be a terrible situation. |

There's always ways around the salary cap. Keep Bowe.

When did Bowe say he was going to hold out if we didn't get a long term deal done?

Nobody would pay Bowe that much, so I wouldn't be worried he might get it elsewhere..

Exactly. The best thing he can do is play under the tag this year and do his best to show the league what he can do and go play with a real QB in 2013.

This is an absolute exercise in futility.
There are also rumors that Bowe's contract demands aren't nearly that exorbitant. No one knows the truth.

But VJAX put up inferior numbers with a much better QB. Bowe's put up superior numbers with a running gag at QB. If he wants Megatron money, milkman, what do you do? |

No way that Bowe is worth anything near what Calvin Johnson got.

Tough for me to go top dollar on Bowe when we've see this guy grow alligator arms when his team REALLY needed him to make a catch to win the game.
5 yrs/$45 million $30 million in guaranteed money. |

Alright, here's what I do.
I just weigh which bullet I want to bite. Do I want to trade Bowe for something Brandon Marshall like, 2 3rds? Bowe has zero character issues, so I may be able to land two 2nds for him. Or I can pay him a massive contract. Megatron's deal is in the OP, and Larry Fitzgerald's contract is eight years, $120 million, with $50 million guaranteed. He's neither one of those guys -- even in years where the QB situation has been dire in Detroit and Arizona, those two guys put up better numbers than Bowe has with his crappy QB situation. At the same time, he has a similar game-changing impact on our offense. Our offense with Bowe can be lethal in 2012, without Bowe... it starts looking really ordinary. So I approach Bowe and I tell him he can risk 2012 on a franchise tag, and we see how that worked out for Vincent Jackson, or he can sign a contract with me now. I am very comfortable signing him long term, like seven years. I am not comfortable paying him $100 million when most QBs don't get that much. I'll give him a better deal than Cassel, but a worse deal than Drew Brees is about to get. Seven years, $80 million is my absolute highest. Let's put the biggest $ on the front and back end of this contract. I'll pay him $15 million this year since I don't need the salary cap space. I'll pay him another $15 million in his last year on the contract. That leaves the rest of his contract at 5 years, $50 million. Which is perfect value. |
