Football Houston Astros to honor NFL's return

With the NFL returning this week, other sports could ignore it. Or surrender.

The Houston Astros are choosing to surrender. Sort of.

According to MLB.com, the Astros will wear NFL jerseys while traveling on September 4 to Oakland. And it won’t necessarily be Houston Texans jerseys.

“I think you’ll see guys wearing the jersey of their favorite team, or favorite player,” manager Bo Porter said. ”A lot of guys may wear jerseys of guys that played at their college that are now playing in the NFL. Maybe a combination of different things.”

Porter explained that he’ll wear the jersey of Texans receiver Andre Johnson. Which means that Porter will be stepping up one level on “the most ridiculous thing a middle-aged man can wear in public” scale.

In the end, it could end up being a great move for the Astros. After all, visiting teams wearing NFL jerseys usually do pretty well when playing in Oakland.

Editor’s note: A prior version of this article erroneously indicated that the Astros will actually wear the jerseys during a game against the A’s. I didn’t read the item on MLB.com closely enough to realize that they’ll only be wearing the NFL jerseys while traveling. For my punishment, I’ll wear an NFL jersey while traveling to Denver today. Or maybe a Major League Baseball manager’s full uniform.
