Most Cursed Sports Town?
Now with KC and Cleveland winning championships, who is now the most cursed sports town?
I think it would be Buffalo. Not only the four superbowl losses in a row but also the 1999 Stanley Cup finals and the skate in the crease game. The other would be Minneapolis. Yes, the Twins won a couple of World Series in the early 90s but since then a lot of heartbreak in football. The Atlanta Falcons playoff game and this years missed chip shot field goal come to mind. |

From Wikipedia.
San Diego has the largest championship drought in the nation with at least two major-league sports franchises; dating back to 1963 (47 Years as of 2010), as well as being the largest United States city to have not won a Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, NBA Finals or any other Major League sports championship. Some fans believe that there is a curse on the major league teams in the city. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_in_San_Diego

When you live in a city that experiences actual inclement weather that limits your time to spend outside, or just out and about, that's when sports becomes your escape, especially during football season. People gather and commiserate with one another, and if the local team does well, it lifts all spirits. When it doesn't, it layers a malaise that is palatable. I just don't know how anyone could live in San Diego and let the fortunes of their sports teams come to the conclusion they are "cursed". If that's a curse, we should all be so fortunate to find one!

Definitely not Minneapolis. Any team that has won anything in the last 25 years is not even in the discussion.

Minneapolis was the first one that came to mind for me. All the Vikings horrible playoff losses. The 98 NFC title game when Gary Anderson missed his first kick all year. Getting waxed in 2000 against the Giants. The Favre NFC title game, then last year, missing a 30 yard kick. Then the Twins won the division a bunch of times in the 00's but never did anything with it. The Timberwolves play in a league where half the teams make the playoffs and they still haven't made it in like a decade... although things are looking up for them. The Wild haven't done anything great either. Atlanta's saved because the Braves dominated the 90's. Buffalo would have to be up near the top, the 90s were horrible. Four Super Bowl losses and then the Music City Miracle. That's an all timer. Then the Sabres blew their finals. I think they've been to the conference finals a couple times since but never got over the top. |

Buffalo and San Diego are up there. I'd put Buffalo ahead of San Diego though because San Diego just doesn't give a shit it seems.

Why would anyone move to Buffalo?

Yeah, but the Twins won the World Series twice in five years.

They did, but it's getting to the point where you legitimately have to be over 40 years old to really remember it. That's not quite Cleveland levels but it's not good either. Especially for a city that has all four sports.

You really remember watching the Twins win the World Series when you were four years old? Then win the second one when you were 8? If you do, then good for you, but I'm guessing you're in a vast, vast minority.

My friends and I made up a drinking game when the Twins were in the WS. We decided that a homer was worth one beer, but if anyone hit a grand slam the loser would have to chug 4 beers in 5 minutes. And then Dan Gladden hits the first grand slam in the WS in like 50 years. I think my buddy Pat ended up projectile vomiting that night. Good times.
