Waning offseason BS topic
Listening to a podcast extolling the greatness of Buckaroo Banzai reminded me of a question.
Ever had a classic in music, movies, TV, etc. you avoided or never experienced because of an irritating or otherwise turnoff experience associated. Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot are two movies I understand to be relative classics. But for Buckaroo, my first chance to see it was at a party. A bunch of people were wanting to watch something current, MTV or Real World or Seinfeld, . . . something along those lines. But there was this one dude at the party who insisted that Buckaroo Banzai was the greatest movie ever. The muscled it into the VCR [dated] and started a running commentary on 'this awesome scene, coming up next' and 'this other awesome scene, right after that.' People rolled their eyes and we all moved on to a bar, leaving him and a couple hangers-on to watch. From time to time, I've thought 'I need to see that some day.' Never have. As for Thunderbolt, I came back to my dorm room from a long trip with friends. We'd picked up something at Blockbuster [dated] to watch, but my roommate and a common friend of ours had gone right before us and rented Thunderbolt. Roommate pitched a fit about how, since he and our friend got theirs first. They had run of the entertainment center. Rather than start a row, me and my other friends went elsewhere. Again, never saw it since. So it doesn't have to be actively unpleasant. But anything notable that circumstances conspired to separate from from experiencing or enjoying. Feel free to include negative associations if you will, but it doesn't have to be that kind of avoidance. Maybe you went to a concert, but had the flu. Or maybe you went to a movie, but it was sold out and it just went out of your consciousness before you got back to catching it. etc. |

I just watched Stripes Sunday night at the office on the large monitor hooked up to my computer. Had some beers and food and still laughed after all these years and seeing it 20 times.

That is, until about two years ago. Then I downloaded the whole series (yes, I pirated it) and binge-watched the whole thing. It was freaking awesome. Come to think of it, I didn't watch Game of Thrones the first 5 years it was on. Then one day a friend of mine said "Why the hell don't you watch it? It's full of nudity and violence. You'd love it". That was the hook that got me to watch it, but that's not why I think GoT is an incredible series. GRRM did an incredible job of creating complex characters that you hate, yet you wind up rooting for (Jaime Lannister), or that you root for from the very beginning (Tyrion Lannister). Not to mention the other characters that cause you to literally cheer out loud when they die (Joffrey Baratheon, Ramsay Bolton). Last edited by Lex Luthor; 08-30-2016 at 05:42 AM.. |

Well, you can take solace in knowing that Michael Cimino went on to make one of the biggest box office failures called Heaven's Gate. Even though the story itself isn't that terrible, his need to control every little thing ended up running the movie way over budget.
He insisted the big battle scene be fought on a plush grass field so the production company had to install irrigation systems. Funny thing was, he used a sepia filter so you couldn't even tell. T&L was probably his best movie, although most people might argue for the Deer Hunter. A perfect movie? Meh, I don't think so. It's not exactly Godfather 2. |

I've never seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I had a couple of chances to go to a late night showing with friends (back when it used to be a thing), but something always came up.

The only thing that I think really qualifies for me is The Muppets. I hate them. And I think it's because of overexposure in high school when my buddies and I did one of our weekend movie fests and we watched like 12 hours of Muppets. I haven't seen any of them since 1995 and refuse to.
I have a general aversion to John Leguizamo. I don't know why, but I really want to hate him. I find, however, that I actually like him in pretty much everything he does. Totally irrational hatred for the man. (Another hatred for Bill Paxton, but I don't actually like him except for True Lies.) Semi-related, I have never, nor will I ever, enter an Old Navy store or buy their products. Their commercials in the '90s when they first started up with Carrie Donovan were so irritating, I refused. Now it's just the principle of the matter. |

I can't watch Deliverance because it reminds me of the times I visited my cousins down in the Ozarks.

I activity and consciously avoid anything with Ben Stiller as the lead or co-lead. I cannot stand him as an actor or as a person.
This all stems from his short lived sketch comedy show on MTV in the late 80's / early 90's.
