Day 1 - AFCW Thoughts

Ok, so Day 1 is done... what are your thoughts so far on how the AFCW teams drafted? Admittedly, I was unable to watch much college football last year, so I don't have much to add on some of these guys.

Chiefs:
R132 - RB, Clyde Edwards-Helaire (LSU)
Day 2 Picks - R2P31 / R3P32

Raiders:
R1P12 - WR, Henry Ruggs (AL)
R1P19 - CB, Damon Arnette (OH St)

Day 2 Picks - R3P16 / R3P17 / R3P27

Chargers:
R1P6 - QB, Justin Herbert (ORE)
R1P23 - LB, Kenneth Murray (OU)

Day 2 Picks - none

Broncos:
R1P15 - WR, Jerry Jeudy (AL)
Day 2 Picks - R2P14 / R3P13 / R3P19 / R3P31

I think the Chargers were trapped into taking Herbert there - maybe should have traded out. I like Murray, but they gave up a lot - they're SOL on Day 2. I can't really argue with the other picks by the Raiders or Chiefs - it's all value and who do you figure is better in your system.

Chiefs - I have no idea about which RB was the better option or if they would have fared better by taking Xavier or someone else.

Very glad Denver didn't have to move to get a WR - was holding out hope that Wirfs might make it to them, but that's how it rolls.

Denver needs a few things today, starting with OT/C... then they can look at DL, CB, would like to see a QB with last pick of R3 or in R4, depending on who is there. You can't invest in all these weapons and then not have someone viable if Lock gets hurt.

What are your thoughts on Day 1?

Broncos and Chiefs did the best.

Jerry Jeudy should have gone top 5..it was incredibly stupid of the Raiders to take Ruggs over him.

Chiefs just added a piece that Reid/Veach felt was missing to make a very good offense unstoppable.

Raiders failed passing on Jeudy. Ruggs is not a #1 but a good vertical #2 like a Will Fuller. But they made up for it with Arnette. I thought Arnette was the #2 CB in this class..better than soft CJ Henderson.

Chargers did the worst. Herbert is a smart game manager, doesn't have what it takes to be top 15 QB. Murray is talented but a terrible scheme fit for Chargers defense as he is terrible in zone coverage. Guess their 5 fans can get even more depressed.

Jerry Jeudy reminds me way too much of Amari Cooper. Drops too many balls at the absolute worst possible time. I wanted absolutely NOTHING to do with Jeudy. Seriously, look at JJ's drop stats. It isn't good. I was hoping we took Lamb at 12 if I'm honest, but I'm thrilled with Ruggs. Kid doesn't drop balls, and his athletic ability is better (yes faster too) than Hill's, and his hands are impeccable. Plus he is a few inches taller than Hill. We needed the deep threat, not another WR that defenses can sit on. He opens it up for our Elite TE and Elite RB.

He isn't the quick twitch athlete Hill is, he doesn't start and stop like that......Ruggs upside is like Santana Moss.

You are wrong, but I suppose we'll find out. Ruggs had better measurements in all the quick twitch skills like the broad jump and vertical, and beat Hill's 40 time.

T. Hill (2016)
5'8 185lbs
Arms: 30.5" Hands 8.0"
40: 4.29 VJ: 40.5". BJ: 129"

Ruggs
5'11 188lbs
Arms 30.5" hands 10"
40 4.27 - VJ 42.0. - BJ 131.0

What really stands out to me is Hill's TINY hands. No wonder he has anger issues.

Ruggs doesn't run fast unless he has the ball or is running in a straight line.

Hill >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Ruggs

I think Ruggs can be a Will Fuller style WR for the Raiders.

If you watch them on film, you see Hill running routes full speed and cutting at full speed, with really great stop-start.

Ruggs has two speeds: 1) Max speed (seen only when he has the ball in his hands or running a straight ine) and 2) Route speed (about 75 percent of his max speed).

He's not smooth in and out of breaks and doesn't run them at full speed, which hurts his separation.

Jeudy is going to be a stud because he runs routes well and separates cleanly and easily.

Jeudy has the highest floor of the three WR. Least chance to bust but I do not think he’s special. Lamb should have been the pick IMO, but I’d gamble with Ruggs over Jeudy. Ruggs could flop but he has the better chance to be something in the NFL than Jeudy. His biggest hindrance is probably Derek Carr is his QB.

The “poor them” pick goes to the Chargers with Justin Herbert. We all know Herbert isn’t that great but the Chargers were locked in on QB and once Tua went it was just a formality at that point. Herberts the guy who has all the measurables on paper but it just doesn’t translate to the football field.

Just running a fast 40 doesn't make him better than Jeudy. Jeudy is a wizard at the position..best route runner many people remember coming out of a draft.

Running routes to gain separation > Running in a straight line

I'm grabbing Jeudy in every fantasy league where I can..no interest in Ruggs.

My thoughts are:

Raiders: Drafted the fastest receiver in the first round, passing up much better actual receivers. Reached like crazy on Chris Carter’s son. D

Broncos: Having Jeudy fall to them was incredibly fortuitous. They didn’t overthink it. A

Chargers: They drafted Blaine Gabbert 2.0 (looks the part, stuff, mechanical, has shitty instincts) and gave up a bunch to go get Kenny Murray. Murray is a dynamic player with everything else they have, which saves them. C

Chiefs: Added a pass catching back who is more versatile in the passing game than Damien Williams, has better stop-start, and is a better/more patient inside runner. Based on the way it fell, the only option other than RB that would have made sense was a trade down - which was hard once Love was off the board.

Donkos - A. Got the best or second best WR in draft and didn't have to move any picks. A win for them.

Chiefs - B+. Would have preferred an instant impact defender, but really like the CEH pick. He will fit well in our system and make this offense MUCH tougher to defend.

Chargers - C+. Like the Murray pick, but gave up way too much draft capital to get him. Herbert will probably be a bust, but I certainly understand why they took him. Don't agree with it, but understand it. I would have grabbed one of the elite OT's myself.

Faiders - C-. Of the top WR's available, thought Ruggs was the worst fit for their offense and their QB. Good player, but questionable pick for the Faid. The other CB was a reach. Not a bad player, necessarily, but way overdrafted. Nothing the Faid did in the first round concerns me going forward as a Chiefs fan.

Jeudy isn't gonna be Julio Jones.....he can be a good receiver but that was one knock on this class there is depth but there is no dominator.

I think Jeudy will be in the conversation for best WR's in the NFL quickly. He's a wow prospect.
