A positive light to shine on this underwhelming free agency.

First off, I think it's safe to assume that we're going to make mid-level signings at WR (TY Hilton please?), LT (Russell Okung please?), and DE (Ingram, I suppose?).

I am also going to make the modest assumption that we sign back Reiter and Breeland/Sorensen, although obviously Breeland is a question mark.

At that point, this roster, pre-draft:

QB: Mahomes
RB: CEH, Williams

WR: Hill, Hilton?, Hardman, Pringle
TE: Kelce, Bell, Keizer

LT: Okung?
LG: Thuney
C: Reiter
RG: LDT/Long
RT: Niang/Remmers

DE: Clark, Charlton
DT: Jones, Wharton
DT: Nnadi, Saunders
DE: Ingram?, Danna

LB: Gay
LB: Hitchens

CB: Sneed, Ward, Williams, Fenton, eventually Baker
S: Mathieu, Thornhill, Sorensen?, Watt

Keep in mind, this is before the draft.

So here's the positive light: the Bills, Patriots and Browns have closed the gap some, but who in the AFC is taking down this roster?

Probably nobody? Probably?

And taking a look at the top teams in the NFC this past year: the Bucs and the Packers have not made any dramatic additions, and the Saints have taken a huge step back.

I think it's clear the Bucs were the better team in the Super Bowl. But do the Bucs win that game if Mahomes had all ten toes? If his offensive line hadn't been in shambles? If two receivers hadn't let TD passes hit them in the face? If the refs hadn't lost their damn minds in the first half? If Andy Reid wasn't absolutely distracted?

Barring surprising developments like Herbert going nuclear in Los Angeles or Tua making a huge 2nd year leap or Cam staying healthy for 16 17 games, the Chiefs are more likely to return to the Super Bowl than any other team in the NFL, and if our roster is pretty healthy and Mahomes is 100%, I like our odds as much as anybody.

This all despite a sucky free agency that hasn't netted us any real improvements except at guard.

But what fun is realistic optimism when CP can go full gloom and doom?

I mean, I sympathize, because this offseason has pissed me off too.

You can only ask Mahomes to restructure so many times realistically, same with Kelce and Jones. And you're asking them to do that this offseason to bring in a stud guard and a bunch of midlevel signings who weren't even the best midlevel signings available?

At the same time, though, we are still the best team in the AFC, and so long as we can get the roster and Mahomes to the Super Bowl in good health, I like our chances.

Why would this offseason have pissed off anyone at this point? WTF is going on here?

Because we didn’t get everything THEY wanted and we’ve become a very entitled fan base.

And this place has always been prone to knee jerk reactions (see GDTs), so instead of waiting to see the full picture, they have to start bitching right now when the offseason is far from over.

I'm not 'doom and gloom' but it's a hard sell to cut all ties with your one anchor at a premium position, then go all out to obtain a particular replacement, and then when you don't obtain it, sell it as 'all according to master plan.'

We still have the most potent weapon in the league, but when it comes to protecting him, we have to be sober that we're now on plan B.

I'm sure we'll assemble something that 'suffices,' but don't expect Bunch Vogle chomping on one of Hannibal Smith's cigars growling 'they all fell into my trap!!'

You do understand that the other guys get paid to do their jobs too, right?

If you had an expectation that Veach was just going to fleece everyone then you were in a wrong place to begin with.

And those guys make a ton of money to do it and spend hours upon hours working on it. I mean some of them are going to accomplish their jobs.

This is kind of silly. I did not demand miracles. I did not gladhand previous deficits on the makeshift O-line. I even said in the post you quoted that 'I'm not doom and gloom.'

But judging by the narrative here when our O-line assets were dropped right before free agency, . . . it KINDA seemed like this WAS the place if you 'had an expectation that Veech was just gonna fleece everyone.'

I mean I get that everyone is hyperbolic when they're nervous, but the difference between the murderous glee before the fact and the 'sober realism' after the fact is kind of glaring.

A lot of people here wanted Fisher AND Schwartz cut and were heavily invested in it happening.

I got shit on then for trying to remain "realistic" about it and then guess what?

The Chiefs cut both of them.

Many people here were ecstatic. Until they realized that the Chiefs aren't going to hit on every single milestone of their plan. Now we're sitting here without a LT and people are like "oh shit".

Um, yeah. It's CP. It's been like this for 20 years.

That one anchor needed paid but wasn't healthy enough to get on the field. Kind of stuck there. I mean they could have kept him and then everybody would be bitching they didn't cut him.

Not to mention he isn’t getting signed anytime soon and can be re-signed later on.

This is another reason why a guy like Okung on a reasonable deal makes sense.

Okung+rookie LT is a solid plan.

If Okung goes down mid-season, play the rookie. If he's not ready, bring back Fisher, who should be mid to late season.

But getting Thuney and LDT are such big upgrades. I like allegrettis potential at center too. Our biggest issue is that teams are selling out deep daring us to beat them short. And we can't because our interior is a nightmare. We can't quick pass when the pocket immediately collapses. And our screen game is a disaster. All the things we should be doing to give mahomes short options we simply can't do. Sure downgrading our tackles introduces new problems. I don't think the interior is more important than our tackles, but lets not sell short how massive an upgrade it is for that unit to go from lousy to good.
