What kind of computer does the average CP'er use?

I'm curious. Did you build it yourself or did you buy it off the shelf?

If you built it yourself... why did you chose the components you did?

If you bought it off the shelf... why did you chose the unit you did? Was it a budget buy for a tool you need or did you shell out for a boutique build?

Do you know the specs of your computer (what CPU or video card (if any) you are using?

___

I built mine in 2013. It is an Intel Core i7 4770k on a Z97 motherboard. Running a Power Color Vega 56 (Power Color Red Dragon) and 32GB of memory. 500GB M.2 for my boot drive and just a 1TB drive for personal storage (which really has nothing but photos of my foster pups.

When I built it... I had a cutting edge machine and I built it to be future proof. I originally had a 7790 video card in there but have upgraded a handful of times over the years to the Vega 56 I run now.

I still use it more for gaming than anything else and it still handles its own. I can play games like Apex Legends at an average of 97 FPS on "medium". That said... its nearing the end of it's run as the heavy game machine in the house.

I used to build all of mine. Researching and gathering parts was fun but I tired of it and have no need for a full desktop any longer. For a very long time I just utilized my company laptop. I don't have that anymore so I just bought me a "budget" gaming laptop, not that I game much but it's powerful with a 17 inch 144hz screen. Lots of stuff drawing on the batter so battery life sucks balls but I'm plugged in mostly. I can turn all kinds of stuff off and stuff to get 5 hours. Key backlighting is red and red only which isn't ideal. I pushed GTAV full everything and it handled it like a champ. As well as Cities: Skylines. I'll probably end up purchasing Cyberpunk now. Hope it's been fixed up. Been having an issue with Office 2007 configuring itself every time I open it though it's a legit registered copy.

MSI GS75 Slim: $1,100 w/shipping
  • PU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10300H CPU @ 2.50GHz
  • Memory: 16 GB @ 1466 MHz (two sticks)
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti, 4096 MB
  • Graphics: Intel(R) UHD Graphics, 1024 MB
  • Drive: SSD, KINGSTON OM8PCP3512F-AI1, 476.94 GB

Look out world here I come.

It kind of went right over my head how much my public school was 'investing' in me [which went to waste somewhat, overall] back in grade school. But in grades 4-6, I was practically married to the school's TRS-80. I can't remember how many they had, but I can't have been a lot. And I would be on that during recess and rest period, any free time, after hours, learning the language and writing programs.

It was all pretty BASIC [punny] because the teachers really didn't know any more about computer architecture or programming than I did, really. But they let me futz around on it to my heart's content. Fairly rare for the late 70s, I'm sure. Probably had something to do with me being ADHD and a distraction in class as well.

I have a Dell Inspiron 17. I don't want to brag, but it fits in my lap and it's more powerful than this:

Yeah you're kinda out there in the ether, somewhat in between generations

I kinda get it... but nothing pleases me more than having an actual CD of my favorite album, it ALWAYS sounds better on my early 2000s stereo with real wood built speakers than any kind of computer stuff IMO
