ESPN Ranks Mahomes #1 in the NFL

Since everyone is up in arms about the #8 NFL top-100 ranking, I thought I'd share that the aggregate of NFL Nation reporters - including luminaries like Adam Teicher and Brooke Pryor - ranked Mahomes #1. Cry not, Chiefs fans - we still have the best player in the NFL.

Quote:
1. Patrick Mahomes
QB | Chiefs
Age: 26
2021 rank: 1

Mahomes is a great playmaker in part because of his ability to complete unconventional throws. He has completed passes without looking at his intended receiver, throwing left-handed and in numerous other unorthodox ways. No other quarterback has produced like him through 63 career starts, and he is primed for another big season. And Mahomes will be energized by a number of factors in 2022: the significant moves made by all AFC West rivals, having a mostly new group of wide receivers, a career-low QBR (62.2) last year and his miserable second half in last season's AFC Championship Game against the Bengals. -- Adam Teicher

Signature stat: Since Mahomes became the Chiefs' starter in 2018, he leads all NFL quarterbacks in ... a lot of things. He is at the top of the leaderboard over that span in Total QBR (75), passing yards (18,707), passing touchdowns (151) and yards per dropback (7.6). Mahomes' .790 win percentage is the best of any quarterback to start at least five games.

What they are saying: "He has so much confidence, and when he walks in the room, results occur because of that confidence every day in practice. That's rare. You don't come across that very much.'' -- Chiefs quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy

2022 projection: 4,610 passing yards, 36 TDs, 12 INTs (358 yards/3 TDs rushing)

With all the deflection picks from receivers no longer here on the team, I agree.

I also think he makes a serious push for the 50 TD mark again.

I think with so many new WRs, there are bound to be some mistimed throws earlier in the year that end up in defenders hands.

I could see 10ints because of that, but I doubt he throws 12 or more.

I agree with the 50td number, too. I see a lot more red zone situations converting to TDs with the increase in larger targets like Juju, Fortson and even MVS. I also see Skyy sneaking in those situations and eating because of his ability to get clean releases.

71% completion %
5100 yards
51tds
9ints

TD passes may be the dumbest stat in all of sports. At midfield QB A throws it 4 yds to a WR that fakes a guy out then breaks 2 tackles and takes it to the house. QB B throws the same pass and his WR is immediately tackled. One gets credit for a 50 yd TD pass and one gets credit for 4 yds passing.

NFL needs to have an official scorer, if he judges a tackle should have been made it shouldn't be a TD pass. I'd also be fine with the official scorer not giving QB's ints when it goes off a WR's hands or a hail mary. It's ridiculous to see QB's down a TD with no TO's and 10 seconds left throwing 6 yard outs instead of going for the endzone because they care more about their stats than winning the game. Do you really think one shot from the 35 is better than 2 shots from the 40?

But this is the NFL and even if it's an attempted hail mary those ints go on a QB's permanent record. Not good come contract time. 1 yard shuffle TD passes look great on the stats come contract time.

That's my QB too, I'm talking about every QB in the NFL. I think wins in baseball is a really stupid stat but not saying anything against Greg Maddux, Just don't agree with the way NFL stats are kept

Fear not. Pretty confident he’s going to place infinitely higher value on rankings voted on by his peers.
