AC unit issue
For any of the experts with HVAC. I had our 22 year old system replaced, furnace and the outside AC unit in late August. Everything has been good since the switch out. This weekend the late night temps dropped enough to switch over from cool to heat. The furnace came on and the desired temp was reached. As I was working around the house this morning I noticed that my outside AC unit was running. My wife said she noticed it had been running constantly since switching over. This is not a heat pump unit so it should not be running when heat is on. Any suggestions on what would cause this?

Sounds like your AC unit is running when it shouldn’t be.

I had a sticky magnetic contact switch, that would allow the AC to run nonstop and it only had half of last summer on it.
Next time it happens. Use a well insulated screwdriver to pull the contact to the off position while it's running when it shouldn't be running. If the contact stays in the off position? You have a bad switch. If it instantly snaps back into the ON position? You probably have a bad thermostat that is sending a ghost signal to the contact switch. Part should look something like this https://www.google.com/search?q=ac+c...3074108-115Z63 Things I've learned from Bugs over the years.

In other words I wouldn't be sticking any screwdrivers in it any where myself. |

No. Not if it's under warranty

Thanks for the replies. I was just wondering if it was something easy like resetting something so I could save some of my vacation time. It is under warranty and I will be giving them a call in the morning. I have the main breaker by the unit pulled out for now so it doesn't keep running.

What exactly do you mean by your AC unit is running? Is the compressor actually running or is it just the fan?
It sounds like its just the fan if your house is being heated. If that's the case its probably a relay or short somewhere in the wiring. |

Kill the power and see if it resets the issue. Should have a disconnect within 6 feet of the condenser. There should be a switch by the furnace to turn the power off to it as well. If that doesn't fix the issue turn it back off and call the installer. Definitely still under warranty.
