What's the skinny on Skinner? I admittedly haven't dove into the prospects' film as heavy this year as I usually do. So I'm curious what you guys think.

Seems to have good length...actually, he looks exactly like a bulked up Sauce Gardner. What are his strengths/weaknesses? Where is his stock currently?

I like him, but too similar to Reid and Cook, in terms of what his role would be, for me.

Well, Reid was FS like 68% or something. Cook I don't remember seeing numbers, but I believe was more box safety.

I was surprised when I read those numbers, it felt like Thornhill was more the FS deep guy more than that.

Anyway.

I don't think Spags wants to delineate positions quite like most people do.

yeah, he clearly doesn't.

I just use it as a shorthand for skills.

FS - Rangy, ball oriented, possible single high.

SS - Compact, powerful, downhill safety who spends more time in the box.

S3 - A bit of a hybrid of the 2 above to allow you to be variable and difficult to diagnose.

I don't think Spags is married to any of the positions, but I do think he looks for those 3 basic complementary archetypes.

Anxious to see how many penalties he gets in the NFL for leading with the crown of his helmet because he does it all the ****ing time trying to lay the wood.

Other than that, reminds me of Kam Chancellor with better ball skills.

I think he's a 2nd round lock but have seen grades in the 3rd.

Chancellor was my thought as well.

Eh. If he's there in the 3rd, take him as a value pick I suppose. I just don't have a ton of value on guided missile safeties anymore. There's just too great a risk of a key penalty.

I know football's a physical sport, but with Reid and Cook already on the roster, give me a guy who plays the ball not the body.

Yeah, I'm with you. I'm exceptionally high on Kaevon Merriweather. Just a ball safety that can play single-high looks as an island defender.

Maybe I'm old school but I've wanted an absolute villain in the Chiefs secondary for a long time. I mean a guy who separates receivers and running backs from the world.

Maybe those types are dinosaurs in today's blue tent, protocol league but IDGAF. Give me a guy who I can count on to knock the living **** out of Chase, Diggs or Josh Allen in the open field.

We have one. It's Cooks. And frankly, Reid can knock the shit out of guys as well.

But you're right - it's a dinosaur mentality. Guys don't do that anymore because even when you do it WELL, it's likely to be a penalty. Thornhill laid a PERFECT hit on Evans to separate him from the ball in the end zone and got flagged for it because his head went forward.

Well of course he did, a 200+ pound man drove his shoulder into his chest.

And when a guy DOESN'T develop past that headhunter mentality, he just becomes Jonathan Abram and is essentially homeless before his rookie deal expires.

It's just not something worth having anymore.

I hear you man. Gardner-Johnson didn't get flagged for that hit on Pacheco but was still fined later.

Interestingly enough, Pacheco had a run up the middle after that hit but wasn't as eager and Gardner-Johnson had words for him on that play. Bolton even took some steam off Miles Sanders with a nice pop on the boundary that almost broke Chenal's arm.

Yeah, perhaps it is an antiquated mindset but I'll be d***ned if the poor bastard on the receiving end doesn't get the message.

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see much of that from Cooks....Reid on occasion, yes...but not Cooks. Maybe next year is when he can just play on instinct. That is typically when the big hitters shine most.

Also, Reid has two years left on his deal and turns 28 when it is up. Maybe they give him an extension but it wouldn't be a surprise if, in the meantime, another physical safety was selected by the Chiefs, especially one standing 6'4" 220lbs.

That was a GREAT hit and damn near made a huge impact on the game. Pacheco is a crazy person so he came back and made a couple of major plays after that pop. But most dudes don't come back from that.

Cooks was a big hitter in college and looked to try to get into a few here and there this year - but he spent a little too much time chasing the play to line guys up for kill shots. I think he has the mentality and the build for it, he was just a hair behind for parts of the year so he wasn't getting it done.

Eh, I just don't care if we get one. 2 years from now is 2 years from now. I'll worry about replacing Reid when the time comes but for now we have Thornhill likely to walk and thats the skills we need to replace.
