I agree that it is "quintessentially" American to be able to express your opinion and that is exactly what I did in my post. However, nobody is required to support your opinion when you express it. In fact, as Americans, we are equally free to express our disgust with someone else when they express opinions that we find to be disgusting.

If you reread my post, you will find that I did not propose that anything should be done to her for her opinions. What I said was that my opinion of her will not change. If, however, she were to come out and do something along the lines of what I suggested and express her apologies to the American people and thank them profusely for rescuing her from her own stupidity, my opinion of her would go up considerably. I find her to be beneath contempt, but that does not make her irredeemable.

I'm quoting myself here because I saw where Griner is doing some serious backtracking. She is standing for the national anthem and saying that she is "very proud to be an American." I think she needs to go further, but she has a taken a serious step in the right direction. Kudos to her for taking the first steps.

I don't think she's anywhere close to being a patriot. I doubt she has it in her to get to that level, but I expect loyalty to the country out of all Americans no matter whether they are patriotic or not. I don't think she was in any way loyal to the country and would have sold us out at any opportunity. I think that part of her has changed though. It's not the same as being a patriot, but it's far better than being disloyal.

I mean, I hate the idea of throwing the book at and torturing anyone off of some ridiculous small drug crime. But there are tons and tons of political prisoners who are innocent and getting tortured far worse. And the only reason she took priority is because a vocal few tried desperately to unconvincingly persuade the public that she was a celebrity. I mean we have journalists like Evan gershkovich who is being detained for simply reporting a story and this is the trade we made? The fact that anyone is going to present this as some kind of sob story is tone dead. And in exchange for a dangerous political prisoner for what? A D list celebrity?
