[Florio speculates about] Raiders and Ben Johnson as HC

AFC West has to be the division with the best coaches, right? Andy, Harbaugh, Payton, and now potentially a gifted player caller in Ben Johnson...

Quote:
There’s currently no other destination that fits. Johnson has interviewed with the Raiders, Bears, Jaguars, and Patriots. The alignment he wants doesn’t exist in Jacksonville, and likely isn’t in play with the Bears. Unless the Cowboys (who blew their window to interview Johnson at any time before the Lions’ season ends because they didn’t interview him via Zoom last week) make a late run, it’s the Raiders or the status quo for Johnson.

More and more people in league circles believe it will be the Raiders.

Still pure speculation. Still not buying it. There's a reason he's still the overwhelming favorite to be the Bears HC, which makes more sense.

Also, Florio has zero sources.

This guy might be more connected to the Raiders...I think what's possibly driving Johnson's interest in the Raiders is Brady.

Just about everything I've seen says this guy is nothing more than a mouthpiece for Vegas.

Vinny is basically the team's mouthpiece.

Oh...it's Florio?

Get the **** outta here, then...

Wake me one someone who knows his ass from a hole in the ground has something to say.

As for Johnson to Oakland...aight. Send him someplace that doesn't have a QB or any weapons to speak of. I mean I'd rather the division suck horribly, but if that guy wants to take Mark Davis's money to be completely irrelevant in a loaded division he deserves to fail.

There are paths to relevance in the NFL.

Joining the one team in the AFC West that has NOTHING at the QB position ain't among 'em.

I can't remember where I saw it, but I once saw someone said "Florio's just being a ****. And a not terribly interesting or insightful one at that."

Having nothing at QB is likely the draw... he gets to hand-pick his guy (to an extent). Jacksonville and Chicago already have their guy.

The lesson, as ever, is that Mike Florio is a ****ing hack.

I would disagree, sort of. I think his sources are agents, but they basically use him as their propaganda stooge. Think back to how he covered Chris Jones, or the fact that the Andy Reid retirement "rumors" ended up with Andy getting a raise.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is just Ben Johnson's agent trying to get more money out of somebody else.

And if he does it after waiting years for the right job, he’s a ****ing clown

What’s that say about your head coach if he just gawks over Tom Brady and that makes his career choices for him

He’d be very stupid.

The average Raider coach lasts 27 games.

This is so true.

I get not wanting to work for a total clown, but you don't need Brady to get that. And here's the thing-- Brady might actually end up being the clown you were trying to avoid. The best owners (majority or minority) are proactive but never meddlesome. They stay out of the way, give a "I'd like to thank the fans" speech on occasion, and let the people they hired do their damn jobs. At his best, Brady would do that. At his worst, Brady might see things differently than the GM they end up hiring and could overrule him even though he has zero experience in scouting or player personnel.

So if his best is just staying out of most of the runnings of the team, why is it so important for a coach to work for him?
