Eric Berry signs franchise tender, to practice Monday 0 By Kevin Patra Around the NFL writer Published: Aug. 28, 2016 at 03:12 p.m. Updated: Aug. 28, 2016 at 04:31 p.m. Eric Berry is officially back. The Kansas City safety reported Sunday and signed his franchise tender, the team announced. Berry will practice with the Chiefs on Monday. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport first reported on Friday that Berry would return early this week. "He's in great shape. It's great to have him here," coach Andy Reid said of Berry. Reid added that he's leaning against playing Berry in Thursday's preseason finale against the Green Bay Packers. The coach said last week he wasn't worried about Berry's conditioning and believed the safety would be in shape to play Week 1, despite skipping all team-run activities this summer. Berry and the Chiefs did not agree on a long-term extension prior to the July 15 deadline, meaning he'll play 2016 on the $10.806 million tag. Until Berry signed his franchise tender on Sunday, the safety was not under contract, therefore not susceptible to being fined for skipping workouts. The sides can't negotiate a long-term deal until after the Chiefs season is over. |

And the cap money is not all that matters. He's also wanting a long term deal and if he suffered an Achilles injury or soemthing like that, his long term offer next year would be significantly lower. Posted via Mobile Device |

The Chiefs estimated Salary Cap next year is $166 million but currently, they have players under contract for $170.5 million, which includes Foles at $10 million, Mauga at $3 million, Charles at $7 million, Colquitt at $5 million.
While it's possible we could see those players cut or restructured, I still don't believe it'll be enough to carry a $12 million dollar per safety, as they have other needs (and the draft). |

I realize that but it would astounding if the Chiefs signed Berry to a long term deal in 2017, because it would have been far less expensive to make it happen in 2016.

Hopefully Berry will come around at the end of the year and give us a hometeam discount. Charles, DJ and Fisher all did so maybe he'll follow. I mean if we'r ever gonna be sucessfull over a long period like the Pats we need a core of team players.

-Rolling over $$ this year would create a little over $8 million in 2017. -Cap rise will probably be around $5 million making it $13 million. -Extending Foles could lower his $10 million 2017 cap hit year 1 to save around $5 million. That's $18 million without cutting Mauga and cutting/restructuring Colquitt. Not sure if that will work, but we have $27 million in 2018 to push the 2nd year cap hits for Poe and Berry.
