Earlier Wednesday, Sony pulled the film, which depicts the assassination of North Korea's leader, following a threat that people should avoid going to theaters where "The Interview" is playing. The country's major theater companies had said they had decided to postpone or cancel next week's showing.
"In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film "The Interview," we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release," Sony said in its first statement on the matter.
"Sony Pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customers, and our business. ... We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie. ... We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."

It's about the insurance on the picture. By not putting it out at all, they get to be cowards on the front end, and recoup losses on the back end. The whole "employees and stockholders" issue gets punted to the insurance company. That's the company that will get to take the bath because of Sony's cowardice.

The apparent decision to forego streaming and DVD sales is also the work of lawyers, from what I have read. Apparently, to collect on insurance, Sony needs a total loss. I would think an insurance company would want them to mitigate their losses, but I don’t write the contracts.

There's no proof of Sony purchasing insurance in case the film's not released. It's just some guy speculating what *might* happen.

There's no insurance against a studio not even releasing a film. Sure, maybe if the film's prints were irrevocably lost beyond retrieval then maybe Sony might be able to collect some insurance money. But it was their decision not to release the movie. How in the world could they collect insurance in this circumstance?

If that were the case, then every film that bombed at Cannes or AFM or in test screenings could fall under this category of being unreleased, therefore qualifying for an insurance payment.

Sony will write off this film, as they've apparently closed off any other distribution avenues.
