Mock (1/4)

Assumptions:

1. All staff is retained.

2. S Eric Berry retires.

3. The Chiefs extend Sean Smith 3 years, $24m ($8m guaranteed).

4. The Chiefs sign C Rodney Hudson 4 years, $20m ($6m guaranteed), OLB Justin Houston 6 years, $94m ($48m guaranteed), S Ron Parker 3 years, $6m ($500k guaranteed).

5. OLB Josh Martin is tendered.

6. The Chiefs sign the following players to minimal deals: TE Demerius Harris, ILB Josh Mauga, S Kurt Coleman, LS Thomas Gafford

7. The Chiefs cut: QB Chase Daniel, WR Donnie Avery, WR AJ Jenkins, TE Anthony Fasano, OT Donald Stephenson, DE Mike DeVito, OLB Tamba Hali, CB Marcus Cooper, K Cairo Santos

8. The Chiefs let walk: RB Joe McKnight, WR Jason Avant, WR Junior Hemingway, WR Frankie Hammond, TE Richard Gordon, OT Ryan Harris, OG Jeff Linkenbach, OG Mike McGlynn, DE Kevin Dickerson, CB Chris Owens, S Kelcie McCray

9. The Chiefs sign the following free agents: WR Jermaine Kearse 3 years, $15m ($6m guaranteed), TE Lance Kendricks 2 years, $5m, NT Kendrick Ellis 2 years, $4m.

10. Compensatory picks: 3rd, 5th, 5th, 7th

On with the show:

1.18. WR Dorial Green-Beckham, Oklahoma

The Chiefs need to aggressively work towards fixing their WR corps. Jermaine Kearse is a major step towards fixing that: a starting lineup of Bowe, Kearse, Wilson, and Thomas is probably enough to give defenses issues. But this is the team's major investment for the future.

Green-Beckham is an effort to potentially solve the Dwayne Bowe Problem. Bowe doesn't sync with Alex Smith and costs too much. DGB needs a lot of work, but does possess better speed, size, and the ability to be a force as a possession receiver AND as a deep threat.

The Chiefs know how to handle projects. They just drafted a major project last year in Dee Ford and he has been coming along well, racking up basically 4 sacks and a FF in two games' worth of work. DGB's ceiling is much higher.

2.49. OLB Markus Golden, Missouri

If a talent like Golden falls, the Chiefs must pounce. This team needs as much passrushing ability in the wake of cutting Hali as possible. Ford looks promising, but has essentially only played two games worth of snaps.

3.80. OG Tre' Jackson, Florida State

The advantage of having Jeff Allen around is that he can play both tackle and guard, allowing the Chiefs to take the best lineman available.

3.100. FS Kurtis Drummond, Michigan State

Abdullah will be a free agent next year.

4.115. CB Steven Nelson, Oregon State

Marcus Cooper and Chris Owens are gone -- not a huge loss, but it leaves the cupboard bare.

5.154. K Roberto Aguayo, Florida State

5.173. ILB Stephone Anthony, Clemson

5.176. ILB Tony Washington, Oregon

6.195. NT Brandon Ivory, Alabama

7.233. CB SaQwan Edwards, New Mexico

7.255. RB Dreamius Smith, West Virginia

The roster:

QB: Smith, Murray, Bray
RB: Charles, Davis, Thomas, Gray, Smith
FB: Sherman

WR: Bowe, Kearse, Green-Beckham, Wilson, Thomas
TE: Kelce, Kendricks, Harris

LT: Fisher, Allen
LG: Jackson, Duvarney-Tardif
C: Hudson, Kush
RG: Fulton, Duvaryney-Tardif
RT: Allen, Sherrod

DE: Walker, Howard
NT: Poe, Ellis, Ivory
DE: Bailey, Catapano

OLB: Ford, Golden
ILB: Mays, Anthony
ILB: Johnson, Washington
OLB: Houston, Martin

CB: Smith, Gaines, Fleming, Nelson, Edwards
S: Abdullah, Parker, Coleman, Drummond, Commings

K: Aguayo

Your best work yet. Crazy roster with amazing depth everywhere but the o line. This might be the most we could hope for. Extending Smith and actually signing houston should free up quite a bit more cash.

Because, unlike Santos, he's an excellent kicker.

What is your love affair with drafting a kicker?

You do realize that Santos made a higher percentage of his kicks as a rookie than the likes of Adam Vinatieri, Stephen Gostkowski, Matt Bryant, etc?

I'm all for bringing in competition, but by taking a kicker in the 5th you're essentially showing Santos the door. Not what I want to see.

There is zero chance that the Chiefs will draft a WR at #18 that hasn't played a down of football in more than a year and who was arrested for domestic abuse and burglary.

And you continue to cut Chase Daniel.

I think it's possible, you are probably right though. Gaines was arrested at rice for drug posession charge, and ended up on probation(with the law), and served a 1 game suspension.

Dorsey after drafting him ""Any time you are a two-time captain to me that says volumes," Dorsey said. "When you've owned up to your past indiscretions as a young man then you've earned the respect back from everyone in that institution, I'm OK with that."

DGB, while he was arrested for both things you mention, was never charged, or convicted of either. I believe he still got into some trouble involving some weed though. But he's managed to stay out of trouble for a year, and the OU coaching staff all have good things to say about him. If he says the right things, and comes across as genuine, i could see dorsey looking past his troubles.

Obviously though Gaines was a 3rd rounder, with a less troubled past, and he had actually been playing football.

DGB would be a much larger investment in the first round, and comes with a more troubled past. But DGB is undeniably a generational type talent. That could appeal to him. But heck, if he's still on the board when we pick, i guess we'll find out.

I just can't imagine Clark Hunt signing off on this guy. It would send the wrong message, IMO, especially since they've put up with Dwayne Bowe's relatively petty nonsense for the past eight seasons, but nonsense nonetheless.

I'm very against drafting another pass rusher that high when you have the best one in football right now along with a first round pick.

I'd rather sign a cheap productive guy like Parys Haralson for insurance.

You may be right, Hunt might not want to fool with another jackass. I'm not sure what kind of relationship Dorsey and Hunt have, or if owners sit in on the interview process. I would think Hunt would trust Dorsey to make a character judgement call. But Hunt may already know of DGB and may just say no immediately. It would be a risk no doubt, He's the classic boom or bust.

It makes absolutely no sense to cut Santos. Look, I'm not saying he can't be cut, but we are not cutting the kid just to draft a kicker. You need to get over it.
