First mock

[Couch-Potato]

Ok...here's my first mock offseason for 2015. Go Chiefs!!!

Tried to emphasis bringing in some talent and competition at OL and WR. Took advantage of available FA in the AFC West to secure our position on top of the division next year!



Resign: Houston, Hudson, Parker, Mauga, Harris

Cut: Fasano, Daniel, Avery, Jenkins

Restructure/Extend: Hali, Bowe

FreeAgent Pickups: WR Royal, OG Orlando Franklin


Notes: Berry out for 2015 season, DJ comes back.



2015 Draft


Rd 1: WR Dorial Green-Beckham (MU) - 6'4, 225 lbs

Typically I'd prefer more of "sure thing" in rd 1, but I just can't stand the thought of missing out on the next AJ, Dez or Demaryius. Chiefs gamble on a guy that is a top 10 talent and pray for the best.


RD 2: OT Daryl Williams (OK) - 6'5, 330 lbs

After a run on Tackles in the first round, Williams falls in the second to us and we address our OL. William's is a big physical aggressive tackle who offers an upgrade for us at RT.


RD 3: WR Philip Dorsett (MIA) - 5'10, 182 lbs

Fastest guy in the draft and he created some buzz at the senior bowl around his ability to separate from coverage. Sounds exactly like what we need in KC!


3b. OG Trey Jackson (FST) - 6'3, 337 lbs

Another big lineman to add depth to our OL. Jackson can play OT or OG and has championship experience at FST.


RD 4: S Eric Rowe (UT) - 6'1, 202 lbs

Rowe can play CB or S and fits the size preferences that Dorsey and Sutton look for in our secondary. Just like Jackson he's another versatile guy, with great size, that can add needed depth.


RD 5: ILB Jake Ryan (MI) - 6'3, 236 lbs

Good depth for us at ILB. Ryan has great range against the run and has had 100+ tackle seasons. Not sure he's DJ's eventual replacement but has the specific skills we need and fills a need.


5b. CB Josh Shaw (USC) - 6'1, 205 lbs

Dropped his draft stock due to immaturity, but he fits Dorsey and Huttons mold at CB physically. I'm for picking him up as a bargain in the 5th.


RD 6: DT Terry Williams ECU - 6'1, 355 lbs

Depth behind Poe at NT. Williams looks like a bowling ball but can generate some pressure.


RD 7: TE Pharaoh Brown (OR) - 6'4, 240 lbs

Was having a great season until injured, I've read he may go undrafted now. (25 catches, 420 yards, 6 TDs in 9 games).


7b. OT Austin Shepherd AL - 6'4, 330 lbs

More OL depth from a winning culture.

Jake Ryan looked really stiff at the Shrine Game.

I think the only guys I like in this entire list is Dorsett and Ryan.

I love Terry Williams and if he lasts that long he would be a tremendous value. I like Ryan, too.

I don't think you need Avant if you're signing Royal and drafting DGB and Dorsett.

Not sure we'd be able to keep all those WRs either, but until the younger guys prove they can produce I'd try to keep him around. I like him for depth and veteran leadership.

I'm surprised no one has suggested Royal, seems like he'd be a great fit for Reid's offense to me. He can separate, produce YAC and is a significantly better deep threat than any WR on our roster currently.

Truthfully we dont need all that much behind Poe bc he seems fine playing all those snaps. A place holder at backup NT would be just fine, but Williams flashes a little pass rush as an added treat.

Truthfully, I'm in the draft an OT in the first round camp. I think it's the right thing to do and the right place to spend the money, especially bc OL isn't nearly as deep in this years draft as WR. Not even close.

Buuuut there is this little part of me that thinks it would be a crying shame to pass up on a guy that is being compared to some of the best WR in the NFL.

I think we are all overvaluing the need for wide receiver. I know its an issue, but I don't even think we need to spend a 1st, or necessarily a 2nd, on the position. Obviously we'll see what free agency presents, but I'd have to put protection at the top of the list of needs and heavily. There were countless times Alex didn't make the plays he should have in certain situations, but there were far more frequent occurrences where he never had the chance. The guy turned into a scared little bitch out there that couldn't see past his nose sometimes. If the Chiefs don't fix that, we'll see a repeat of this season, if not worse.

I mean that offensive line was atrocious. Rodney Hudson played at a Pro-Bowl level last season. The next closest to even being respectable was Ryan Harris and he was sub-par.

I know people here want Fulton to start again next year, but he didn't show enough to me to warrant any sort of guarantee. He needs serious competition. I think everyone feels equally about left guard. I mean, Jeff Allen and Jeff Linkenbach, terrible guards in their own right, look like All-Stars compared to McGlynn. The left guard position needs an immediate starter-upgrade over all of those. And to think, a guy that still has rookie strength and was starting his first season on the blind side had to learn with absolutely no help and an absolute turnstile next to him.

Speaking of Fisher... I think its time to at least bring in someone that can compete for the LT spot but still man the right side. That's why I'm so high on Ereck Flowers. Its truly time to put up or shut up.

The catastrophe of it all would be if the Chiefs don't re-sign Hudson. Then you're looking at needing to replace, basically, the entire offensive line.

This is a big year for the Chiefs and if they hope to contend then they need take the firing squad out from in front of Alex. My top priority is LG and if one of Clint Boling, Mike Iupati, or James Carpenter come available, then KC needs to be a player in that sweepstakes. Fixing at least one of the issues in free agency will go a long ways in helping free up draft resources. Even then, I think KC will have to spend 3 picks on the line if for nothing but depth and competition.

Well considered post, kccrow, as always.

I think there are about 5 guards that you could draft in this draft and they'd start in 2015 and be very good. I don't think we need to go there until the 3rd, or possibly the 2nd if a Pro Bowl caliber talent like Josue Matias is still there.

I think tackle is very realistic, and probable, in the 1st. There's tons of excellent tackles and only so many WRs. I think the WRs are gone by our pick.

By the way, as bad as the OL was, it was not historically terrible like the WR position was.

Albert Wilson was the #2 WR on our team in yardage last year, and he basically only played four weeks.

I think it depends on how you view "historically bad." If not for Alex's insanely quick release in most situations in 2014, I would say that KC would have easily competed with some of the worst lines in the NFL. It was bad. You look at a QB that is mobile, with a quick release, in a quick hit offense, and he was still sacked 49 times (26th in the league) and had an adjusted sack rate of 9.4% (Football Outsiders: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol), which was tied for 29th in the league.

I understand it wasn't epic, like this year's Jacksonville Jaguars (71 sacks and 118 QB pressures... my God), but it wasn't good. It wasn't anywhere near a level where you could say Alex Smith can thrive. I think we can agree it has to be fixed. I agree WR has to be fixed. I just don't put as much priority on receiver as a I do O-line at this point.

I think the strength of this draft, when it comes to receivers that fit the offense, comes in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I will say, we aren't far off in philosophy, but I'm not convinced we need to spend a 1st and 3rd on receiver. Right now, I'm trending towards OT, WR, OG, ILB with the first 4 picks and coming back to WR in the 4th or 5th.

Alex Smith actually has a high sack rate everywhere he goes, and it's primarily because he refuses to throw away the ball.

The OL is largely built for next year. It needs a tackle or a guard (depends where they want Jeff Allen), but 4/5 starters for next year are in place, assuming they re-sign Rodney Hudson.

WR, however, the team is certain to just burn to the ground and build back up through fresh acquisitions.
