Except that every national sportwriter is stating it as a five year deal that averages $17.5 million.

As Florio stated, it's nonsense and the biggest fiction in assessing sports contracts.

The truth is, he received a 4 year extension for $87.6 million.

More than likely, it's a 3 year, $57M deal and they'll renegotiate before the 2018 season.

That's true. The issue is that even on spotrac there is a missing year in his contract. They mark out the final year of his old contract then say he signed a 4 year deal that runs through 5.

To me, it looks like a 3 year, $57M deal, which is basically fully guaranteed unless the Hawks cut Russell for performance related issues.

It would be tough for Seattle to cut him after giving him $31M to sign.
