NFL source: Chiefs facing "abyss"

http://www.kctv5.com/story/30243233/...s-facing-abyss

Quote:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

As bad as the first five weeks have been for the Chiefs, it could get a lot worse.

That is the verdict of one long-time NFL executive.

"I don't have to be there to know how bad it is inside their offices and locker room," he said. "When you lose a game like Sunday's loss to the Bears, there's a real hangover."

That makes sense, KC blew a 17-3 lead against a poor Chicago team to fall to 1-4 on the season. Two of those losses came at home, and they were in games that the Chiefs seemed to have in hand. Offensive mistakes and poor defense fueled the defeats.

But, as bad as that is, it could lead to bigger problems.

"The concern for Andy is that the guys stop buying in," he told KCTV5. "If they stop listening to coaches, or start pointing fingers at each other, this could really get ugly."

The long-time exec has always been a big fan of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, but he said Reid is in a dangerous situation.

"I think the players respect Andy," he said, "But if the owner undermines him in any way, that could change. It could really implode."

Chiefs Chairman Clark Hunt personally selected his head coach and general manager John Dorsey, so it would appear highly unlikely that he would do or say anything to put the leaders of his franchise in a bad light. Even when faced with firing former GMs Carl Peterson and Scott Pioli, Hunt did nothing in advance to put his GMs in a bad position.

The NFL executive told KCTV5 that he is also worried about the Chiefs quarterback.

"Alex Smith has been left 'naked,'" he said, "First, he had no offensive line and now he loses the main component of his running game. Good luck with that."

He said the loss of running back Jamaal Charles will make Reid's game-planning and play calling job a lot harder, and that an already weak Chiefs offense will have an even harder time moving forward.

He also said the problems extend to the defense.

"I think (Chiefs defensive coordinator) Bob Sutton's in trouble." he said. "I really like Bob, but that defense should be better."

The veteran exec has faced these kinds of issues himself, and he says he "feels for those guys." "I hope they get it fixed," he said.

So do the millions of Chiefs fans worldwide.

KC will play at Minnesota this Sunday. A game you can see right here on KCTV5. Kick off's at noon.

Your list is missing the biggest problem, which apathy.

We all saw it in the second half of the Texans game, the second half of the Broncos game and the entirety of the Green Bay & Cincy games.

The players just don't look like they care. They have the look of a beaten team before they hit the field.

It's 2012 all over again.

How could this have happened? These guys seemed pumped about the season 6 weeks ago.
Several players saying "super bowl" over and over again

It seems to me that the turning point was the Denver game. That loss and the 5 turnovers killed anything they had. Reid seems to have lost the team from that point forward.

Alex Smith is not the exception. Every successful team needs a good defense, a decent run game, and a smart QB. Why else would teams be paying 70 million a year for their defense personnel? You disregarding the importance of having a good defense on this board is absurd.

No. Rock bottom comes when you're winless, everyone is fired, and one of your players shoots himself in the head in the parking lot after murdering his girlfriend. We've seen rock bottom before. This isn't that.

This is just a shitty football team with a coaching staff that doesn't know how to right the ship.

Siding with Tiger uppercut. Nice.

You still think adding OL talent somehow fixes this team. Good luck with that.

Bull ****ing shit. Your ****ing ilk of posters on this board cry foul when Smith is compared to the likes of Rodgers and Brady because they are Hall of Fame QBs.

**** you.

Also, it was never about KC having a good defense and a decent running game for Smith. That ****ing loser needed an ELITE defense and an ELITE running game to succeed and he STILL couldn't get the job done and would likely never have won a playoff game had he not had the fortune to go up against a team coached by a painkiller addict that had absolutely no defense.

Get ****ed you worthless ****.

Why wouldn't this make you happy?

We're well on our way to getting another case of losers shipped out on the first train to the football garbage dump. Progress!

It's what I've wanted since Alex was traded for.

We're 12-17 over the last 29 games...you think I should have been happy during that span?

You are saying "decent." Alex Smith needs his supporting cast to be elite. Because he literally cannot win games for you.

Russell Wilson and Eli are excellent on third downs and in the fourth quarter. They can complement a good defense and running game. Alex Smith, on the other hand, has converted 30% on third downs and has less than a handful of games he's closed.

When Aaron Rodgers and Peyton had beat up ols, know what they did? They pull hard counts. They created a quick throw strategy. Two years ago, Peyton faced us with half his ol out. He neutralized our defense by getting rid of the ball insanely fast.

Alex Smith doesn't manage games well because he doesn't convert third downs. He doesn't close games. He doesn't step up when the defense steps down... Ever. He doesn't outsmart defenses. He's there to run plays, not make mistakes, and hope the defense and run game are both outstanding. None of the qbs you listed above are that uninvolved in winning games as Alex is.

Wtf makes you think that things will change? Sure I want it to change, but look at Lamar Hunts time in KC....

Now look at Clark Hunts work since taking over. It's the same damn thing over and over again.

It appears to be ownership that doesn't want to do the things necessary to win.

I really do think that Clark doesn't want a first Rd QB. Idk why he doesn't but look at the history.
I'm just sayin'. Don't get your hopes up.
