gblowfish: Please start thread for 50th anniversary Chiefs/Dolphins C'Mas 1971 game

It's only fitting that you start this thread seeing that you were actually at the game. I'll throw in my usual thoughts and photo from that Christmas heart breaker.

That game gave me Chiefs PTSD for 50 years.

Let's start a new tradition of looking forward to playoff games. We've had three straight AFC Championship Games at Arrowhead. Let's be optimistic and hope we'll see four in a row!

I spent part of the day yesterday trying to see if there was video of the entire game on YouTube...no dice, only highlights.

Although I had live in the KC area most of my life, except four 4 years in the mid to late 1980's, I never saw the game in its entirety on TV. Because of NFL rules at the time, all NFL games were blacked out in the TV market where the game was to be played regardless of how long the game had been sold-out. I believe the 72-hour "rule" went into effect in 1973.

I was 7 years old when this game was played.

Since this is a dedicated thread, I’ll repeat my experience that day.

I was ten years old and the family went to Grandma’s for Christmas dinner. I heard all my uncles in the living room screaming and shouting and I was like, WTF is all the commotion? So I went to check it out and they invited me to take a seat and explained the scenario. They were all rooting for the dolphins but since KC was the underdog in that room, I decided to pull for the chiefs.

That was my introduction to football. I was so enamored watching Ed Podolak fighting for every yard that I wanted to run the football, too. The first opportunity I had I signed up for small fry football and made it as a RB. I was small and not very fast but patterned my style after Podolak’s tenacious style. Played RB all the way through varsity where I was converted to WR and corner.

Hard to believe how much that moment influenced my life. It sparked my love of the chiefs and football. The determination that I played with carried over to my personal life. It’s also hard to believe how much I’ve loved the chiefs all these years even though all they’ve given me since that one day has been heartache until LIV. But it’s all been worth it.

This is correct. It was radio or nothing at all that day in my part of the world.

The game was replayed at midnight in Topeka. On UHF Channel 27. **** Marv Fleming.

My Dad missed the first half of that game. He was one of four doctors that encountered a person who had a heart attack walking into the stadium and they did CPR on him. The guy got lucky to have a heart attack while 4 doctors were right on hand and ended up surviving.

All four declined to have their names published by the press b/c, in that era, doctors considered it unethical to advertise. My Dad is the only one of those 4 doctors still alive, and he's 97 (turns 98 in March). I have no memory of this game since I was at the baby sitter's house.

Coincidentally, the only time I was able to make the pilgrimage to Arrowhead was in 1989 against the cowboys. Unbeknownst to me until I reached the stadium, it was also the day Ed Podolak was inducted into the chiefs ring of honor. Needless to say, that made an already special day for me even more memorable.

My dad had a big ass directional antenna, for the specific purpose of pulling in Chiefs games from Wichita or Columbia. Often the games didn't come in very well, but on that day the picture was pretty decent.
