So after yet another yellow flag parade with this subs favorite referee I decided to do a little basic arithmetic to see if the data matches the eye regarding Carl Cheffers officiating the Chiefs.

I started with the 2017 season, since that is after Kelce's comments following the 2016 AFC Divisional loss to Pittsburgh. I included all regular and postseason games.

Carl Cheffers has had the Chiefs 12 times since. He has called 97 penalties for 879 yards on the Chiefs or 8.1 penalties for 73.3 yards/game.

Opponents were called for 81 penalties for 670 yards (6.8 for 55.8 yards/game)

But maybe the Chiefs just get called for more penalties? In the 95 non-Cheffers games since 2017, the Chiefs on average are flagged 6.47 for 57.26. Opponents are flagged 6.43 for 50.62 yards.

Chiefs opponents in Cheffers games are called for penalties at rates 5% higher than all others and have 10% more penalty yards. That seems to be consistent with how Cheffers officiates most games. In a median season he calls about 10% more penalties and 10% more penalty yards than the other crews

However, the Chiefs are penalized at a rate 25% higher with Cheffers and are called for 28% more penalty yards.

So, It does appear that Cheffers has been hard on the Chiefs since Kelce's comments

Caveats: n=12 is a smallish sample size, I didn't control for some variables. Didn't test for statistical significance. This could be more noise than signal, etc.

Underdogs are 31-14 against the spread for Cheffers games and about even for rest of the ump crews (because Vegas is good at what they do).
Quote:
I just looked it up on Pro-Football Refrence.

The Chiefs in 14 games this season have given up 20 first downs by penalty.

5 of those came yesterday. 4 came against Las Vegas.

So those two games have combined to give us 9 of our 20 first downs given up by penalty.

Cheffers led the league in flags thrown/season and per game. Next closest ref was Hoculi, 20 less per season. Tha idiot Bleetman threw nearly 30 less flags. Torbert 40 less.

I think Triplette was the worst, but Cheffers is right up there.

I posted this in another thread, but why would the NFL intentionally choose a referee who is most likely to make the game controversial by calling numerous penalties that other refs don't call? Even if you don't buy the "Cheffers hates the Chiefs" or "Cheffers is owned by brady" arguments, you have to believe that the NFL shouldn't want a referee on the field who calls a disproportionately large number of penalties.

This is horrible. We're going to see a bunch of penalties called that disrupt the game.

Exactly.

Let's set aside for the moment the fact that Cheffers seems to rat-**** us at every turn. We'll turn off the 'conspiracy' stuff for the sake of conversation.

Cheffers simply does more than any other official out there to determine outcomes.

Every single season Cheffers leads the league in flags and penalty yards. Like clockwork. He absolutely refuses to let the teams play and ruins the flow of these games. You rarely see a Cheffers game that he doesn't have a direct impact on.

He's absolutely the worst possible official for the Super Bowl because he's GOING to involve the zebras in it. He's going to create controversy.

And the league simply doesn't give a shit.

****ing hell that's irritating.

Yeah just pure random chance that the guy who set a Super Bowl record for penalties in a half against the Chiefs 2 years ago, the guy who always keeps underdogs in the game, the guy whose crew throws by far the most penalties, winds up becoming only the 3rd NFL ref ever to work 2 Super Bowls in 3 years.

Just pure derp derp, league is incompetent. Definitely not the league trying to make sure the game is close and exciting, and has plenty controversial calls, which they also seem to love because no publicity is bad publicity.

Bring it on.

Mahomes will overcome the high ankle injury, the Bungholes and Carl Shitface Cheffers to win the Super Bowl.

I think they like the controversy. They want people going nuts over the calls. It drives engagement.

But mostly they want a close game. They want a ref that completely gifts the trailing team a drive, exactly like Cheffers did with Houston a few weeks ago. Compare some of the ticky tack calls that saved that Texans drive on multiple 3rd downs, with the way the playoff games have been called so far. You pretty much have to tackle a receiver to get a DPI in the postseason *usually*.

It was the same way in the 2020 playoffs. The refs totally swallowed their whistles. Then we got to the Super Bowl and any touch was a penalty, and sometimes we didn't even touch them. Anything that even looked like it could possibly be defensive holding or illegal contact was called in that first half.

They should have fired Cheffers after that Super Bowl. Instead they gave him the biggest accolade an NFL ref can get - another Super Bowl 2 years later. That tells you everything.

This is really disheartening. I thought for sure after the TB Super Bowl that at least Cheffers would be punished and not ref another SB for a long time, if ever. Instead it's exactly the opposite. You know every other ref sees this and realizes what the league wants, if they want to ref a Super Bowl.

Close and exciting, like the SB between Tampa and KC? Yeah, what a nail-biter that was.

Muffalo losing to the Bengals should've been the end of the "NFL is rigged" nonsense, but here we are.

I'm hopeful the rest of the crew (which I think [hope] isn't the same crew as his normal one) will call a better game and it will just be Cheffers being a ****lehead.

I don't mind a lot of flags. There is a LOT of blatant shit that they let go in every game, and the really big ones, sure throw the flag, I won't bitch. But what really grinds my ****ing gears are 2 things.

1. Not calling it for both sides. How the **** can this be a thing?

2. Call ticky tack shit while letting blatant shit, out in the open, ****ing go.

GOD that shit pisses me the **** off.

I don't mind a lot of calls, if they're competent.

They clearly made defensive holding a point of emphasis for that Super Bowl, just like they did for the Chiefs/Rams Monday night game where the assigned ref crew was mysteriously replaced right before the game. The new crew came out and called multiple phantom defensive holding calls on the Rams' first drive, which resulted in a crazy offensive shootout and exciting near comeback by Mahomes.

The plan didn't work in the Super Bowl because of Eric Fisher's achilles.

There's a difference between a shadowy conspiracy rigging games and the league rewarding refs who steer the kind of games they want. They never have to say anything. It works the same way in big corporations. Your boss always has ways of communicating what they want, even if they can't come right out and say it for some reason (plausible deniability usually).
