That's what I was trying to think of. I kept thinking of Orville Redenbacher, but knew I was wrong.

No, this is genuinely very, very bad. And this isn't like paying hundreds of grassroots people as fundraisers. Russel Wilson's name and image should do the bulk of that and these are essentially his cronies that he's paying with charitable fund money.

Not the percentages strictly speaking, but that many big corporate charities rake a lot of money off the top and pay high salaries. A few years ago IIRC it was shown that (one major one) was taking almost 20% off the top.

Give locally and directly to causes you care about, not through these filtering operations.

The reality is that for a lot of charities these are major organizations. And major organizations need major figures at the top to run them and that demands competitive pay.

And yes, 20% off the top would be something like a standard. The fact that Russell Wilson's charity is like 70% off the top is just ridiculous beyond belief.

charitynavigator.com is a good resource if you're giving to a well-established charity and want details on their activities.

I can't speak to corporate charities. I'm 100% sure Twisted is more educated than me on that.

My recommendation for charity is to buy local.

In college my fraternity did a fundraiser for a local battered women's shelter. We didn't raise a ton of money, I wanna say it was in the neighborhood of $4,000. So we did a dinner where we invited some faculty for some good PR. The gal from the shelter came and legit started crying about how much the money means to the shelter.

15 years ago, and it obviously makes an impact on my dumb ass.

Typically if you're worried about it, on a local one you can poke around and figure out what they're doing.

If you're feeling the need, I'd definitely recommend to shop local on charities.

Nothing at all wrong with this approach if the causes you want to support are localized or have local components. If you are wanting to contribute to something like fighting Altzheimer's or some other terrible disease, local options might be limited. Even with Altzheimer's you could find ways to contribute locally to people suffering from the disease, but the actual research to prevent or stop the disease itself is probably something that requires funding on a much larger scale and national/international level.

Agreed. No question. But if you're worried about admin costs, local is the correct answer.

All of these athletes have "charities" and "foundations". It's nothing more than a way for them to avoid taxes.
