VARSITY
Veach and Reid have a template to compete each year

They are using a Bellicheck/Brady modified version they used to sustain success.

Basics:
  • Elite QB
  • Great O-line
  • JAG and or FA value WR's and RB's
  • Solid Defense
  • Good kicking game

Discipline
  • Move up in the draft to get "your" guy despite what the points say
  • Leverage the success to encourage and work with older and cheaper FA vets seeking a ring offering one year contracts.
  • Don't give 3rd contracts to your guys over 30. No matter how good they are currently.

Seems obvious to me. What say you?

If we threw a lot of picks at this years ago we’d be talking about vetted cheap options instead of a wr room I think even the biggest optimist has to acknowledge has risk to it.

If we have cap and pick restraints then building and maintaining a top 3 defense is going to cut into what you can put into the offense. Not that that’s a terrible thing. But I feel we should be tilting it the other direction where maybe a top 10 or even top 5 defense is great if it means just a little more room to maneuver for offensive weapons. I would rather pay just a little less attention to our defense so we aren’t constantly asking mahomes to just settle for what he’s got.

And as I’ve pointed out before what we’re doing is a reaction to something we should have anticipated years ago. And we shouldn’t wait for kelce to escape his prime to come to that same realization. Because we have to prepare for a world where our WRs have to shoulder way more of the responsibility. Is a room full of WR2s still gonna cut it?
Rashee Rice and Skyy Moore are 2nd-round picks. They both qualify as "little shifts". THAT is the investment here. There's not much more they can do when they're trading up in the 2nd, especially when we're constantly picking at the end of round 1. The guys available in the mid-2nd aren't any worse than the guys we could pick at 32, honestly.

As for asking Pat to do more with less, Pat was all on board with drafting guys like Rice. He's not being asked, he's doing the asking. I think we should trust him a little.

Well yeah, we’re taking actions to save the house after it was set on fire. When you have to fill 5 WR slots with two of them being central positions, you’re gonna throw resources at it. But we are in this place because we deprioritized in the past. And if history holds true if we get to a place of “good enough” at WR will we deprioritize again until the next dam bursts.

I don’t think we should have deprioritized in the first place forcing us to play catch-up. And we can’t stop there. If these guys are anything short of WR1 or a very good WR2, we’ve gotta keep swinging. If the goal is to use 2nd and 3rd round picks you gotta take a lot of swings. Even when our room is set we should always be keeping a strong pipeline so we have options when second contracts come due. The question is, will we keep our foot on the gas?

That's always going to happen unless you get really lucky and dudes taken late end up as starters.

The worst thing you can do in a draft is just take a dude cause he plays a certain position.

You’ve got to take a lot of swings and accept that you’ll have some misses. Our problem is that we haven’t swung until the last minute. There’s always been a fire somewhere else that was more important. It gets harder when you feel obligated to fill every single defensive and offensive position with quality starters.

It wasn't a priority because there was a HOF'er at one spot sucking up 150 targets and a 2nd round pick at another, then a few mid round picks producing.

The issue though is that we need a couple of things - options and/or willing trade partners. This year the WR class was s*** for elite talent, so you might as well go R2, and we did. The OT class was decent enough but there was no way to get up without burning so many picks that filling in other roster spots becomes a nightmare. Would I have liked to have kept a pick and taken another flyer later on, probably, but it's splitting hairs because that second guy aint getting snaps.

If I'm bitching about Veach whiffing on offensive talent or just not trying it's MEH. With Higgins there it was a terrible, terrible pick. It happens.
No question Kelce is going to be tough to replace. Hopefully in the mean time we get lucky on a 2nd rounder hitting. But you also that there is a good chance when that happens hopefully it frees up some cap room. We are able to swing a trade for one of the yearly unhappy Wr who needs a fresh start or change of scenery.

Bottom line given the salary cap, teams that players on team that wins want more money... FA and Draft is going to be plugging holes to keep going.

That is the thing you do not have a lot of swings with the draft. You have only so many swings and some of them have to be used to fill needs and others have to be used on steals the scouts identify and not just you want to make a bet on a long shot because he plays the right position.

So Toney is a similar gamble. He absolutely could become a top 3 WR.

Or he could become a guy that makes Hammy Watkins look like an iron man.

Without a high pick, you are left with gambles that have high up sides.

Or trying to make Mahomes get by with Jags.

Mostly.

Kelce for instance is a glaring exception.

Having one stud WR is not a reason to not actively seek a WR2. No matter how you spin it we didnt have any WRs outside of tyreek because we deprioritized it. And we probably shouldn’t have. And the very notion of pumping up Demarcus and Pringle just further proves my point that we are too complacent because we either overrate players who are products of mahomes greatness or because we just assume that should be the new norm for mahomes to elevate lesser talent.

But in that instance we did this because we didn’t try. No matter how much we spin the softball efforts to fill our wr room.

Sammy Watkins high dollar deal. Didn't try.

Mecole Hardman second round pick. Didn't try.

The Seahawks and Bengals drafted all these 4th and later picks that count, ours don't.

I'm not pumping up Robinson or Pringle, I'm saying they were what you are going to get at WR 3 and 4 numbers wise when Kelce and Hill suck up targets like they did.
