Well if he 'thought he saw' a 300 lb man horsecollar a RB from behind that promptly rolled forward as he was tackled, he has a poor grasp on physics and/or the human body and probably shouldn't be an NFL official.

Because what he 'thought he saw' very obviously couldn't have happened.

It was horseshit.

In particular, this still highlights my thoughts. You can see #11 would have an unobstructed path to Mahomie here if Smith didn’t have him yoked up in a clear hold. He doesn’t rip or swim here because Smith has him cuffed lol I’ll give Donovan props for being so strong

If you have to respond to a video with a single frame, you're probably wrong.

I’m going to bet he doesn’t know physics at all. Maybe he does. **** all if I know.

He sees 500lbs of of two humans coming at him in real time at real speed. Was it correct? No. But this isn’t the first time a ref has flagged what he thinks he sees. Won’t be the last either.

I’m not defending the call. But I’ll bet it looks way different at that speed on the ground.

I'd say it was a hold in the making.

An inchoate holding. He had exhibited a clear intent and taken overt acts towards committing a hold.

But Jermaine Johnson didn't continue at his outside shoulder and actually force him to do it.

Yup - had to be a screen. Look at how far downfield Creed and Humphrey are and how they hold at 1 yard before both simultaneously bolting down the field. That was clearly the timing of a screen pass. And they break just as Kelce should be receiving the pass. Anything else and it's going to be the most obvious ineligible man downfield penalty ever committed.

With as carefully timed and coordinated as Reid's screen game is, I don't think there's any question that was a designed middle screen to Kelce. And as obvious a foul as has ever existed happened right in front of the official who's job it is to watch for that very foul and it didn't get called.

But yeah - Chiefs get all the breaks.

Good catch.

If he's in the frame of the defender, the OL is going to be able to "hold" all they want.

It's literally what you teach your OL to do.

Exactly.

It's like I was saying with DBs - you're taught to slap at WRs in your pocket so long as you keep your hands below your chest from pretty much the moment they put pads on you in peewee.

Read the rule as strictly as possible and it's illegal contact. If you want the sport to, y'know, exist - it's not a penalty.

That's what OL are taught from the moment they get too fat to play DE anymore. Then get stuck on the OL in HS and are taught that if you keep your hands inside your shoulders, all bets are off. Especially if/when you keep your legs moving underneath you and keep your chest square to the defender.

NOBODY would expect that to be called a holding penalty and all this "it's clear as day holding" shit from the talking heads who know better is just nothing but sour grapes.

This is stuff we've known since time immemorial and now we're going to pretend like it's not obvious.

Refs typically let many penalties go unless they blatantly effect the outcome of the play.

Hence... you can find a holding call on EVERY play. The ones that are called are the ones that had a drastic impact. (Most of the time).

If the refs called everything, 1 NFL game would last 5 hours and games would end up like 12 to 3. Defense doesn't sell the NFL brand.
