Are player podcasts a problem for coaches?

No, I'm not talking about the Kelces. They've just about perfected this medium of theirs. It's the best product and it's never controversial.

Recently Micah Parsons on his podcast gave his top 5 NFL teams. He didn't put the Cowboys in there and gave his division rival Eagles a nice long blowjob. Also funny that he deliberately didn't put the Chiefs up there, claiming the other teams are just "more talented." Yeah, Micah. We'll see about that.

It strikes me that with these player podcasts, there isn't a team media rep coaching them through jack shit. It's dudes on a mic talking about the current events in the game that they play. Anything can be said, and it's possible that anything gets said.

In this case, Parsons isn't exactly shitting on the team, revealing any secrets, or reflecting poorly on the organization, but there are likely several coaches out there who would probably tell him to shut the **** up, and might even have a team policy about these kinds of self-expression outlets. If you're a teammate, you might be a little bit weirded out by the best player on the team not confident in the organization he plays for to call them a top 5. And sure, the only way the Cowboys play the Chiefs this year is in the Super Bowl, but do you really want that kind bulletin board material to just freely leak out like that? Unprompted and with plenty of forethought, and it gets said anyway?

If you're McCarthy (or even Jerruh) do you give a shit what Parsons says? Do you pull him aside and tell him not to do these kinds of segments like he's a douchebag on ESPN? Do you make a team policy about what can/should be said outside the walls of the building?

I'd say it depends on the coach and what's being said. As long as it's not detrimental to the team, I don’t think most coaches care

Podcasts are just the newest version of speaking freely to a reporter.

Jerruh has done a good job making the focus about media and celebrity. I’m sure he loves it. It’s also a reason his team has been pretty irrelevant from a competitive standpoint for decades.
