The Chiefs have granted cornerback L'Jarius Sneed permission to seek a trade, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday. Rapoport added the Chiefs could elect to use their franchise tag on Sneed ahead of next Tuesday's deadline and then trade the fourth-year defensive back.

If Kansas City does indeed tag Sneed by the March 5 deadline, the organization will have until mid-July to either lock him into a larger extension or presumably make good on its word and trade him. The one-year franchise tag for cornerbacks is set at $19.8 million for the 2024 season.

The 2020 fourth-rounder has blossomed into a stud for the Chiefs during his rookie contract, developing a reputation for sticky coverage with 10 interceptions, 40 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and 6.5 sacks in his career.

Teams are sure to come calling, but they'll have to compete with the K.C.'s negotiating power and the lure of sticking it out with the team that drafted him to make a run at a Super Bowl three-peat.

I’m optimistic after the rumors today, but still doubt we get even 1 first round pick.

I’m still leaning towards a second or a package of lower picks.

If you had to choose would you rather keep Sneed (and pay a vet WR) or keep Thuney?

You could also move on from (or extend) Reid to free up some cash. There are plenty of ways to keep Sneed if they really want him. The problem is if they are getting offered a 1st round pick from someone, they are going to take it either way. That’s 5 more years of a 1st round, cost controlled talent and we are ridiculously deep at corner.

This is really a numbers game with Sneed. They clearly think the value he brings via trade is too good to pass up for the long term future with the depth we have at the position. I freaking hate it but it is what it is. They know what they are doing.

That very well could be, but with relatively poor draft and FA CB classes, Bert doesn't HAVE to do anything. KC can keep him on the tag. KC can sign him to an extension. We sure as **** don't have to settle for a 2nd and a 4th.

The myopia around here thinking they are going to get offered a 1st rounder for Sneed. It's mind-numbing.

I've been beat down several times but the fact is the teams have some leverage on him. *Not my opinion, just facts* Not an all pro, not a pro bowler, concussions, knee problem and teams will ask questions like is he as good without another all pro playing with him? His best season by far was this year when McDuffie really turned it up too.

I personally kind of lean towards paying him over Jones so don't shoot the messenger.

The former.

But we don't get to make that choice. Thuney has a MASSIVE dead cap charge if we cut him this year.

Cutting Thuney saves about $5 million on the cap this year. Now it would accelerate dead cap we would end up taking if we cut him in 2025 so it makes next year's cap sheet a little cleaner (so you could do some stuff with structure of new guys to help there) but really, the cake is largely baked with Thuney at this point.

Maybe they watched Sneed make Reek his bitch on national TV or something.

If Bart Vatch manages to pull the Lions pick it'll be another massive notch in his belt. We could sure put a mid 2 to good use though.

We could sign a veteran and draft a guy in the first two rounds to play LT. Cut Thuney save that money this year and have it open more next year. Then move Morris to LG where he could be really good. With his strength and run blocking

I'm not sure why anyone keeps suggesting cutting Thuney. There's essentially no cap benefit to doing so.
