The Netflix Favre Doc is out

They really don't hold back all that much, they have people from every level of his career back to high school talking about what a pile of shit the guy was...

About the only thing that they have in common is a strong arm and a willingness to use it. Mahomes also knows when to throw and when to not throw it more often than not.

Late stage Favre did a lot of that, for sure.

From about 32 and beyond, he started writing checks his ass couldn't cash anymore. Some of that was a decline in physical skills, some of that was just that the league caught up to the more high-flying passing games a bit.

But he 'only' led the league in INTs once before he turned 34. And in his playoff career prior to that late stage Favre era, most of what he did in the playoffs was just lose to better teams.

I mean it's not like the Packers were hot shit around him. Everyone loves to glaze Reggie White but the guy didn't even make it to GB until he was 32. He was still good, but he wasn't THE Reggie White at that point; more of a good story than an amazing player.

In the 93, 94 and 95 seasons he lost to the Cowbooys in the midst of their Dynasty. It happens. He was a young QB in someone else's story.

96 season they won the title. 97 they lost to the cheating Donks and it's hard to say his 'recklessness' was a reason why.

98 they lost to the 49ers on that goddamn miracle T.O. catch as time expired. Can't really kill him for his DC not knowing how to defend a go up the !@#$ing seam...

Then Homlgren left, got replaced with the dipshit that was Ray Rhodes, and Favre really lost a couple years of his prime.

2001 came and he lost to the Greatest Show on Turf Rams -- they were just a better team than GB. I mean, he was shattered ass in that game, but that's when I think we started to see the desperation start to sneak in. That was when things go pretty tough for him in the post-season and I think he started trying to do too much.

But I do think there's a bit of revisionism when it comes to 'Brett Favre' whereby we don't really divide his career as we should. There was the Young/Prime Favre (who played in the era where they'd beat the holy **** out of QBs) who guided an ascending team to a championship squad with a very good coaching staff around him.

Then there was the descending Favre back when 32 was pretty damn old for a QB. His team wasn't as good. His coaching staff wasn't as good. He'd been beaten to hell for about a decade at that point. And no, he just flat wasn't as good.

But I don't think it's fair to say that was emblematic of his entire career. It was his post-prime years. Those should be viewed on their own.

Great points. I would say that I am one of those who lumped all his years together vs separating them. Appreciate that.

Again, y'all are just really hand-waiving his prime years, IMO.

Prime Favre won 3 straight MVPs, threw 35 TDs/season (led the league all 3 seasons) and had a damn good INT% (routinely in the top 10).

That's just not "dumber than a box of ball hairs" at all. That's a HoF resume by the time he was 30 years old. If he just flat retires after the Broncos SB, the narrative of him as a dipshit gunslinger just doesn't form. He would be on the short list of Rushmore candidates.

We often excuse Mahomes for 'trying to do too much' when things around him aren't working. And we won't give Favre ANY of that same latitude when we saw what he was capable of doing in his prime when he had good pieces and a good staff around him?

Time really hasn't been fair to Brett Favre, IMO.

He was as dynamic as QB play had ever been in his prime, backyard hero ball that actually won more often than not... theres a good reason why both Reid and Veach directly comp'd Mahomes to him after the 2017 draft

Before Brady and Manning came along, a lot of people had Favre in their top 5 QB of all time.

Montana
Elway
Marino
Favre
Bradshaw

I think it usually went something like that.

Yeah, i mean I'm an early 80s baby so he was king shit in my HS years. It's hard to say how well I remember all that.

But yeah, he was pretty universally considered a top 5 guy. It was really one of the first times you saw the "Brady vs. Mahomes" debate but instead it was "Montana vs. Favre"

Duration vs. Peak. Steady vs. spectacular.

Take that argument and turn it up to 11 and you have Brady vs. Mahomes. People were really having the exact same argument even then, generally under the assumption that he'd win another ring or two.

Then it just didn't happen in the latter half of his career.

But that doesn't change how ungodly good he was in the first half.

Favre is my all-time favorite QB.

If Fat Mike would have stayed in GB, they win another ring. Ray Rhodes sucked away one year and Sherman stalled the franchise.

People also forget that after Sharpe retired early, he never had another elite WR again. Driver was great but not HOF level. Favre made hay throwing to Antonio Freeman. Javon Walker had potential before his ACL went down.

Mike Sherman was a Peter Principle hire who squandered talented teams.

The 2003 Packers were on a hot run before the defense blew a 4th and 26. They definitely beat Carolina the next weekend if the safety didn't go for the pick.

Favre definitely threw some tough picks but he went firing and usually went down firing trying to save his team or kept pace with better squads. The 2001 Rams were winning that game no matter what. People forget how many bad calls and AP fumbles occurred during the 2009 rigged NFC Championship Game.

Even the 2007 NFC Championship Game is misremembered. The FOX experts kept talking about how GB had the advantage in cold weather when the team except for Favre and Driver were all pretty young and inexperienced in Lambeau weather. They acted like Lombardi's frostbitten veterans were out there. McCarthy also produced a terrible game plan that night. They barely ran the ball after Grant went for 200+ the previous week.

As great as Rodgers was in his prime, he would rather stat pad when down big than try for the quick comeback.

The thing that hurt Favre the most is that the game changed in his last decade regarding defenses being neutered. A QB didn't need to risk as much. The easy throws were there more often than not.

But damn, I will occasionally watch the 2009 NFC Divisional Game versus Cowboys and he dropped one pass to Sidney Rice from 50 yards out right into the breadbasket. An angel couldn't do better.

I miss watching him.

The 2007 and 2009 NFC Championship Games gutted me as a Favre fan.

The most painful defeats to me as a fan are those two games, Army losing to Navy in 2012 and 2015, and the Raiders playoff loss to Cincy in 2021.

The Super Bowl blowout stings but close losses are the worst. To come so close hurts more than a blowout.

Regan Upshaw gets suspended for that shit today. Back then? Not even a flag -- back in the huddle, go throw a TD.

EDIT: Doesn't look like the link worked. Google "Favre Regan Upshaw hit" and it'll find it . Upshaw essentially elbows him in the earhole as he turns his head -- Favre pops up yelling at him then throws a 40 yard touchdown.

Favre was the Al Davis QB that got away. I can't believe Al didn't land him. Big, strong, tough.

A Raiders fan pointed out to me that the Chiefs before Hill left were built like an Al vertical offense. Bombs away with a strong arm QB. He wasn't wrong. That is why we drafted Ruggs.
