C.J. Miles Ends Suspense Premium Story
By Dave Telep National Recruiting Director
Date: Oct 19, 2004

The recruitment of C.J. Miles was much more of a marathon than a sprint, that’s for sure. On Tuesday, the Texas Longhorns chased down a small pack of contestants to win the services of C.J. Miles.

There aren’t too many big fish from the state of Texas that have eluded Rick Barnes. Other than Chris Bosh, who went to Georgia Tech, the Longhorns have been stellar in terms of landing the top-ranked in-state player since the arrival of T.J. Ford a few years back.

On Tuesday, Texas struck again. The Longhorns landed the best player in the state of Texas and the No. 10 prospect in America, according to Scout.com. C.J. Miles, a 6-foot-6 stud wing player out of Dallas Skyline High picked the Horns over Kansas and Georgia Tech.

Miles’ father said staying home is a plus.

“I don’t think there was a lot of pressure [to stay home] but the importance of staying home is greater than pressure," Calvin Miles said. "You’re the No. 1 player in the state of Texas and if you stay at home it’s not a bad thing. You’re honoring, really, the state of Texas. It was a great decision.”

C.J. Miles thinks he can bring some attributes to the program that UT loses this year.

“I know they lack some outside shooting after this year and I know that I can bring that,” Miles said.

Texas had its work cut out for it in landing this commitment. The Jayhawks had run out to a good lead only to then take a commitment from Julian Wright, which ultimately caused Miles to wonder if it was too crowded on the wing in Lawrence. Then, Georgia Tech did a nice job on the official visit and made up some ground.

However, as is usually the case with the hometown school, the longer the recruitment goes the better the chances of landing the prospect are. In this case, the recruitment went just long enough for the Barnes and his crew to work their magic.

Having a great program, a top notch facility and the right personnel on the staff didn’t hurt either.

“I think the deal for us was that Texas always trailed Kansas but the main thing that got our attention was that they are going in the right direction,” Miles Sr. said. “But, I think the strength coach just put us over the top. The [Todd Wright] guy is amazing and I know what he’s done in the past. There were many things, but that was one of the highest things.”

Miles thinks his stay in Austin could be short-lived if he can put some muscle on his frame and bulk up. Like Ford before him, no one is expecting four years out of the young man.

“If I have a good year, I could be gone in one," Miles said. "I’m not saying that’s what I want to do, but it could happen.”

I'm surprised KU stayed with him as long as they did. The guy is obviously not college material.

He's a stud, but in a way I'm glad. He seems like a guy who wouldn't stick around anyway. His major reason for going to UT was immediate playing time. That tells you he's at least thinking about getting in some "practice" at the college level before he makes the jump.

I like what Self has done with this year's recruiting class, and next year's with the exception of Chalmers. He's collected a lot of good players, none of which are singular stand out studs, but who with some work will make one hell of a powerful team. Guys that are willing to learn first under senior leadership, then work as a team to accomplish goals. Chalmers is stud PG, and some are saying that given a good enough season this year, could skip out and go pro. He's more of a Marbury/Iverson kind of point guard rather than a Miles/ Vaughn PG.

Anyone hear anything about Jeremy Mayfield? Apparently he is a guy both KSU and KU are looking at. He has a visit this weekend @KSU. They have an open practice/scrimmage on Saturday before the football game.

I think his decision was purely based on there is a CJ Giles @KU already. CJ Miles and CJ Giles would be weird.
