Freddie Mitchell

Former Eagles and Chiefs receiver Freddie Mitchell is still hopeful of returning to the NFL.

Mitchell was at his alma mater UCLA's Pro Day Thursday to chat with scouts. "Success is situational," he said. "The right coach can take an average receiver and put him in the Pro Bowl." Come on Fred Ex, just give it up.

Why exactly? He's played his entire career in a west coast offense, with a coach who likes to pass the ball; with a QB who is pretty damn good.

Seriously though, why - I'm curious?

A couple of years ago, I might have really liked to go after Darrell Jackson.

Now, I'm not sure.

He is still only 29, but he also still has a pretty bad case of the dropsies.

He'd actually be pretty good fit in a Chan Gailey offense, though, I think, if he could just hold onto the freakin' ball.

During his three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, head coach Andy Reid has never had a wide receiver with more than 63 catches, or one who posted more than 833 yards.

But when the salary-cap casualty floodgates sprung open nearly three weeks ago, sending experienced wide receivers like Keenan McCardell and Antonio Freeman into the market, Reid and vice president Joe Banner never once considered reaching for the telephone to contact any of the free agents suddenly available to them.
