Gunther will fix the defense now...

Just be patient.

http://chiefsblog.kansascity.com/?q=node/346

Gunther moving downstairs?

Gunther Cunningham would like to call the defensive signals from the sidelines for the season's final 11 games. Cunningham, the defensive coordinator, has been working in the press box on game day.

Cunningham said it would help the Chiefs make adjustments if he was stationed on the sideline.

"We're trying to think of anything we can to put the players in the best position to make plays," he said.

His plan needs the approval of head coach Herm Edwards but Cunningham could be on the sideline for the Oct. 19 game against Tennessee at Arrowhead Stadium.

I highly doubt it.

He's old and hasn't done anything notable in the league since 1997. I guess he might wind up as a linebackers coach somewhere.

This way, Mr. kstater, he can yell and spit directly into the players' helmet earholes. He can jam sticks and little rocks and dirt and stuff in there, too.

From a coaching perspective, it's far more effective.

Are you excluding Herm? Because he'll probably always be welcome in Chi. and Ind.

Copy that, Mr. Adam.

There has to be something to the notion that the Chiefs have difficulty developing draftees. Too much smoke. There has to be fire. Or, at least a highly serious burning itch somewhere near the nutbag area. But, to your point, the reason defensive linemen stick out in this regard is because we've drafted so damn many of them trying to find a mature, pre-cooked, self-starting, highly-motivated guy who joins the team with a complete package of starting quality NFL-caliber technique. Over.

Gun coordinated some very impressive defenses and can at least make the logical argument that the D was improving in his latest stint here until Carl traded away our best defensive player. Likely a moot point, anyway. Gun is getting a bit long in the tooth to keep doing this and will probably just retire when it all finally stops.

Still, try to think of another member of our coaching staff who will be able to find work in the NFL after this titanic sinks.

Herm?- nope.
Gailey?- doubtful.
Crummy (Krumrie)?- nope.
Curl?- nope.
Price?- maybe so, maybe no. Probably end up coaching college again, if I were to guess.

Welcome to do what? Herm was never a coordinator and his teams have stunk. If Herm lasts the year, he will be 53-75, lifetime. What would someone hire him to do?

Why do people hire curly dicks?

Herm is part of the network and thus has tenure for life. DB coach in Chi or Ind? Sure, why not.

We'll see in a year or so, I guess. You may be right- his friends probably have enough clout to get him an offer but then you have to ask yourself if Herm would accept a DB coach position, working under one of his more successful friends. And I guess one has the examples of Art Shell and Norv Turner as evidence that proven failures retain access to the NFL head coaching cabal.

Gunther needs an impact player like maybe...Glenn Cadrez. That would elevate his entire defensive squad to the next level.

Don't get me wrong, borracho. I'm not saying the guy can or should do anything. But it seems like once you're in, assuming you don't do something off the scale stupid, you're in for life.

In Indy, at least, I'm sure Dungy has full control over who is on his staff. If Grandpa had it, I'd have to think Tony does, too.

Dungy may retire, but if Edwards got on there it'd be funny to see him promoted to head coach. Herm Edwards and Peyton Manning - A MATCH MADE IN HELL!

Can you imagine Peyton telling Herm to mind his own business on 4th down late in the game? If it didn't work...the post-game press conference would be a dooooozy!

Now you're talking crazy. I don't think Herm gets another head-coaching gig after KC. Well, maybe the Raiders, which would be beautiful on so many different levels...
