End of story: Shanahan is not taking Chief's job

Shanahan is not taking Chief's job

KANSAS CITY - Mike Shanahan may not have a new job after all. After reports surfaced the former Denver Broncos head coach was close to taking the top job with the Kansas City Chiefs, those reporting that have backtracked.

ESPN now reports only that the Chiefs are targeting Shanahan for their head coaching job after the team fired Herm Edwards on Friday. Initially, ESPN reported that a deal was near between the Chiefs and Shanahan.

Edwards was fired after going 15-34 in three seasons. He still had one year left in his original four-year, $12 million contract.

The NFL Network's Adam Schefter, who recently finished writing a book with Shanahan, maintains Shanahan will not be taking the job with the Chiefs and is not considering it.

"They are not near a deal. They are not near a deal right now, they were not near a deal yesterday, they will not be near a deal tomorrow. Mike Shanahan will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs," Schefter told 9NEWS. "All the people in Denver can stop worrying or stop talking about it, it's not happening. I know there have been national reports to the other effect. I'm here to tell you just the opposite, it's not going to happen."

Schefter says he has spoken with Shanahan directly about it.

"I speak to Mike regularly, there has been nothing in his tone or in his message that has given me any indication that he will be the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. I know for a fact they've not had contact to this point. The Chiefs may in fact reach out to him in the coming days and even then I firmly believe it will not change anything," Schefter said.

The Broncos have hired new head coach and former New England Patriots offense coordinator Josh McDaniels to replace Shanahan.

When he was fired, Shanahan still had three years left on his contract, worth about $20 million.

I don't personally care if the new coach is Shanahan or not, anything, including the deposit I just left in the sewer system a few minutes ago is an upgrade over Herm.

However think about this.

It's been five - six hours since it was announced that Herm has been fired.

The Shanahan rumor has been around since at least Tuesday if not earlier.

The only FIRM denial of the rumor is from a junior (as in please change my diaper, I do believe I have soiled myself I am so upset at being scooped) reporter that has his panties in a bunch that his BFF may have fed him some intentional misinformation.

There has been plenty of time for both sides, especially if the Rat is trying to play this into another coaching job with Dallas or whoever, for an official denial to be issued.

Who's this Phobia dude?

Just wondering... it was asked many times in the night crew thread too... never heard of the guy... I think he's just an urban myth.

You know - I think it is very possible that some junior official at the Chiefs ran his mouth after Herm was fired, got called on it by "The Don" and had to call Mort to backtrack. The Chiefs have to interview at least one other candidate, so they can't look like they just went straight to the Rat.

Where's BRC's source when you need him/her?

Nope. I've tasted his ribs. I've tasted his Jambayla. I've drank more than a few of his Boulevard (various types) beers....Phobia, Phil....is NOT an urban myth. He is a legend. A legend, I say. The Great Phil shall return, some day...when the time is right.

Say in Arrowhead Parking Lot before the 2011 Playoff game versus the Broncos with Shanny on our sidelines.

This sounds plausible to me. In fact I was rolling around a screenplay in my head with this very scenario.

I don't know, this doesn't exactly seal the deal (or whatever the opposite that is) for me. I'll take it for what it's worth like everything else I read.

Can someone fill me in on this Crennel talk? Where did the "Crennel as DC" rumor come from?

I can get over that, it's all the other factors that don't sit well with me.

Pioli was in the FO of the Pats, when Crennel was DC of the Pats...during their first two SB runs.

Rumor? Duh....

Makes sense if you think about it. (Don't mean it's true, but it makes sense.)

I really don't know if I've ever seen you this worked up about anything. I've given my condolences to you over the Shanahan firing Taco, I know how you felt and I empathized with it. You're setting yourself up for a major meltdown if this goes down.
