Chiefs Romeo Crennel

Since there is clearly nothing good to talk about and we're all thinking about "next year", I thought I'd waste some time and throw this out there. Romeo will be our DC next year.

When Gary Gibbs and Clancy Pendergast were hired, it wasn't clear who was going to be the DC for several days/weeks. Ultimately the nod went to Clancy, but most of us were speculating that they were trying to get Romeo and that was why they didn't give either one the nod for a time. Romeo said he was going to "take the year off", but expects to be back in coaching next year.
My thought is that Haley and Pioli told Gibbs & Clancy that they wanted Romeo, but if he declined...the job was going to Clancy. Basically they gave Clancy the job to hold for a year and if he does well, he keeps the job. Doesn't look like that'll happen.

Romeo makes too much sense to not end up here. He clearly doesn't have what it takes to be a HC and he knows it, yet he did very well working with Pioli and both know what each other is looking for in personnel.

Pioli knows Haley has too much on his plate and needs to have someone capable of taking care of everything on defense. He needs to make it a non-issue for Haley so that he can focus on offense. He also knows that Haley will always be heavily involved with the offense, no matter how many assistants and consultants he has on that side of the ball...and he wants him to be.

Pioli brought Haley in here because of his offensive experience and wants his focus to be on that side of the ball. Romeo is given complete control on the defensive side of the ball and Haley takes the offense with the HC title.

We assumed that the hesitation was because of Romeo, but, given all the other **** ups, it's not out of the question that incompetence was the root cause of the delay.

Wade Phillips will be in here next year if he's fired in Dallas. Pollard got us Cassel. Beating the Cowboys this weekend may get us Wade. LOL He could be in here by the Redskins game. Alas, we're losing by 20.

My wife loves the cow boys so I'm hopn we hang about 40 on them,and they kick about 3 field goals...Yeah I know......

Good thinking, Mr. Ralphy Boy. When Pioli was hired, I inquired as to who would be the best available DC this off-season. The overwhelming response was Romeo. I don't know if he'll still be the most favored choice, but he would probably do a good job.

But, the main point is this; How "loyal" will the Pioli regime be to its coaches? We know Pioli harbors very little loyalty to players. That much is clear ... proven both here and during his tenure with NE. However, coaches are a different matter. For example, although they did relieve Gailey of his OC duties, they retained him at the same time.

One of the big, big, big problems the Chiefs have had for decades is unqualified super-loyalty. Lamar demonstrated super-loyalty with Carl and Carl did the same (in most cases) with his coaches. Both DV and Herm were also super-loyal to their staffs - almost always to our detriment, by the way.

If they give Clancy the boot after this year and bring in a top-rated DC and/or OC, I'll be ecstatic and those kinds of moves should provide all of us with reason to hope.

It wasn't just speculation that they were after Crennel. It was outright reported that he'd been offered the job.

Among other places, the Cleveland Plain Dealer said Crennel was offered a position to stay with the Browns and the DC job here. He had no interest in staying with Cleveland, but had to consider his hip replacement surgery and recovery before comitting to anything here. Ultimately, he opted to take a year off.

Whether that closed the door on him, or they're letting Clancy keep his seat warm, who knows.
