Yea, but when you run the hot water, there is cold water that is running into the tank, so it is always moving too.... at least from the meter to tank. It's not a bad idea to crack each one a little though.

I didn't take into consideration that homes farther south may have the hot water tank in the crawl space. I could see where it could freeze up. I suppose home construction and the area you live could make a big difference.

the hot water tank is inside the house. I'm no expert really. All I know is that when you turned the hot water on, nothing came out. But the cold water was running. So I checked the pilot light, it was on. Assumed it was probably frozen and went down under the house with a blow torch and now the hot water is back on
