Bunch Of Phonies Mourn J.D. Salinger
Bunch Of Phonies Mourn J.D. Salinger
January 28, 2010 CORNISH, NH—In this big dramatic production that didn't do anyone any good (and was pretty embarrassing, really, if you think about it), thousands upon thousands of phonies across the country mourned the death of author J.D. Salinger, who was 91 years old for crying out loud. "He had a real impact on the literary world and on millions of readers," said hot-shot English professor David Clarke, who is just like the rest of them, and even works at one of those crumby schools that rich people send their kids to so they don't have to look at them for four years. "There will never be another voice like his." Which is exactly the lousy kind of goddamn thing that people say, because really it could mean lots of things, or nothing at all even, and it's just a perfect example of why you should never tell anybody anything. Between Catcher and the Twilight series, I'll take Catcher for literary quality.

I guess there is some literary value there... but as far as entertainment value (which is important) there is ZERO.

He was one of the world's great recluses.
I'm surprised someone realized he was dead. |

I thought it was one of the most entertaining books I ever read.

"Catcher in the Rye" was great. I read it in high school based on a teacher's suggestion. Before that, I hated reading. I remember telling the teacher I liked it and he then handed me Kerouac's "On the Road" I then discovered a lifelong love for reading thanks to a high school teacher.
For the record, "Franny and Zooey" is just as good, if not better than "Cather in the Rye" Lastly, someone mentioned he was a recluse. Salinger indeed was a recluse. As a matter of fact, some time in the '90's, his house burned down. His house was so secluded in this heavily forested area that the fire department couldn't reach it in time.

And this is why high school teachers hand their students this book. Very common experience for a certain type of kid (usually somewhat intellectual, disaffected youth who don't really dig on traditional school shit).

Loved Franny and Zooey, I've never read Catcher in the Rye, however. |

There was never a Catcher in the Rye movie, but now there could be…
As one of the most popular books of the 20th century, The Catcher in the Rye garnered a lot of interest from entertainment big shots who hoped to adapt the book for the stage and screen. Everyone from Elia Kazan (On the Waterfront) to Steven Spielberg wanted to take on the film, and stars such as Marlon Brando and Leonardo DiCaprio have wanted to play Holden at some point over the past six decades. Salinger refused all offers, reportedly because he had allowed a short story to be adapted in the 1940s and was so dissatisfied with the end product (1949’s My Foolish Heart) that it soured him on selling rights to any of his other work. But in a 1957 letter, Salinger wrote: "I toy very seriously with the idea of leaving the unsold rights to my wife and daughter as a kind of insurance policy. It pleasures me to no end… to know that I won't have to see the results of the transaction." Now, with the author’s death, we could very well see a film adaptation of The Catcher in the Rye in the not-too-distant future (if his will doesn’t forbid it).

I didn't try to relate to him. I just observed him in his hilarious glory. Holden is a real piece of work.

I love reading. I named of my children Holden. I finally read Catcher in the Rye, and I always anwser no when asked if I named him after Caulfield. I thought Holden was such a hypocrite, not to mention whiny. Guess I should have read it when i was in JH or HS. My son was actually named more after a song, but mainly cause we liked it.
