Yep. I said it. Voles.

They weren't really a problem prior to this spring as my cat had become particularly adroit at catching them, but he died this past December and I now have a full blown crisis on my hands. Tunnel holes are everywhere and I'm worrying about the garden. I'm not sure I want to set off sulfur gas bombs because of the proximity of the vole holes to the vegetable garden. Same thing with pellets.

Anyone ever have a vole problem and how did you effectively deal with it?

The prairie vole is a notable animal model for sexual fidelity, since the male is usually faithful to the female, and shares in the raising of pups. (The woodland vole is also usually monogamous.) Another species from the same genus, the meadow vole, has promiscuously mating males, and scientists have changed adult male meadow voles' behavior to resemble that of prairie voles in experiments in which a single gene was introduced into the brain via a virus.

The average life of a vole is 3–6 months. Voles rarely live longer than 12 months. The longest lifespan of a vole ever recorded was 18 months

I knew this. They have been used in numerous clinical research studies for brainwave activities and endorphins as it relates to mating and attraction.

I just want to know how to kill the little ****ers without screwing up my crops.

I've thought about it, but apparently, after some research, not all cats are adept at vole hunting, particularly hunting for the burrowing vole types. All I need would be another cat that couldn't catch the voles and just decided to kak up hairballs and rip into the couch.

Get a BB gun, set up a lawn chair with a case of beer in a cooler, and have yourself a relaxing afternoon.

They are the burrowing type. Underground, so to speak. Dig up and under plants and chews them up. Very hard to shoot with a gun. I have used explosives in the past but that just sent them into the neighbors yard.
