Would a little Stanzi vs Cassel competition help?

Some people(myself as one) believe that Scott Pioli has avoided bringing in any real competition for Matt Cassel. In part, because a quarterback controversy seldom does a team any good and also because Cassel has a history of losing virtually every QB competition in which he's involved.

I watch Cassel play now and i'm not sure which he's more concerned about, completing the pass or avoiding a hit by the pass rusher.

I wonder whether or not a little QB competition would encourage him to overcome his fear and get him to commit a little more to completing the passes and stop looking at the pass rush and dancing around.

Stanzi vs Cassel ... help or hurt?

This is more a commentary on the fans than the QBs.

I think it is just stupid to assume that Pioli will not add talent to the roster because it might ruffle Cassel.
First accusation of Pioli was that he wouldn't keep or pay Herm's picks. Wrong.
He also would only pick choir boys. Wrong.
Hell, the only Egoli myth that hasn't been debunked yet, is the: "he won't pick a QB in the 1st, or bring in another talented QB" BS, which will also be debunked.

Teams generally struggle when there is a QB controversy but that is because they generally only come about when the said team is getting shitty QB play....and all teams struggle when getting shitty QB play.

So I don't think it is the controversy that causes problems but rather the poor QB play.

That said I'm not as down on Cassel yet as most. If after 6 games this season he is in the bottom half of starters then I would be willing to throw in the towel on him as the QBOTF and probably willing to throw in the towel on him as the QB of the present as well.

Just remember that these were probably the same people begging for the Chiefs to take Jimmy Clausen because he was so much better than Cassel coming out of college.

We could start Stanzi until the draft when they demand the Chiefs draft a QB in the first round. Then when that QB does poorly in his first 2 games they will demand a trade for someone else's backup QB. Then they will demand that we draft another QB in the first round the following year.

Yeah that's what I meant for it to be. If a QB sucks, the fans will want whoever is behind him to get a shot. It's just the nature of fans. Even if the backup QB is Gilbert Gottfried, the first time Cassel dances in the pocket for 10 seconds only to get sacked for an 11 yard loss, you'll hear the fans chanting GOTTFRIED GOTTFRIED GOTTFRIED.

I guess it's just a matter of perspective. Because I haven't seen anything that shouts "fear" to me in any way, and that certainly wasn't what I was referring to when I mentioned Zorn. All I'm seeing is a failure to execute, and some part of that is not directly attributable to Cassel. He doesn't look comfortable to me, but I think that's half because he's got a new QB coach in his ear, and half because because of the lockout. And before people say "it hasn't hurt other teams!", the reality is that the passing game here has never looked like the Chargers or the Patriots before, so I'm not particularly surprised that the Chiefs didn't suddenly turn into a passing yardage machine suddenly after the lockout. They've had problems with the passing game in the past, problems we all know they'll need to work on resolving, and, no surprise, that's what it looks like in the preseason. So, yeah, I'm not real surprised that Rivers or Rodgers or whoever else looks better than Cassel. Because they are. And because their units are, and have been.

And there isn't another QB on the roster who is going to do things well or threaten to take his job, not when we're talking about real NFL games. Although if there was one, it would probably be Palko at this point, and not Stanzi. I think Stanzi's head would be swimming if he was asked to execute the actual Chiefs offense as it will be gameplanned and run on a regular season game day, and that's without even considering what he'll see from NFL defenses, which will be doing things he's never seen at a speed he can't even grasp at this point. So basically, I think if there's ever a Cassel/Stanzi controversy, it probably will not happen now. Have him involved in the meetings, have him on the practice field as much as you can (reps need to primarily go to the starter...), and have him pound the film study. Have him pick Zorn's brain (and Cassel's brain) for as long as it takes him to 'get it' - if he ever does. Then it's time to start talking about playing him.

Theres prolly less than a 1% chance of Stanzi wearing anything but a ballcap this year & thats likely for the best anyway.

Cassels gonna have to crap the bed in some profound way before that happens, but he needs to gogo gadget in 2012... i get & appreciate the hard worker aspect, the team guy aspect yada yada, but this is the tough luck NFL where you either need to be great or take a back seat.

I'm just dead sick of his erratic play & Huard-esque arm, its driving me nuts... sad, sad fact - i'd rather have Matt Hasselbeck or Kyle Orton, both are more consistent & throw better balls.

Just not gonna feel sorry for the guy anymore, when they finally do send him packing he can take solace on his yacht with some Spanish model in Bimini.
