Need advice on Year 2000Volvo S40
We are looking at this car for my daughter. It has over 120,000 miles. A year ago the owner put in a set of 4 new tires and a new battery. The asking price is $3000.

Couple things I am worry about:

1. The orange check engine light is on all the time.

2. I don't know if the timing belt is ever being replaced. What is the cost for replacing that? I don't want to find out in a hard way.

1st: have it hooked up to a reader on the check engine light. Volvo check engine lights are notorious for going off from poor gas cap seals and minor crap like that.

2nd: is she going to have someone to work on it other than a Volvo dealership? That gets expensive.

We owned a 1998 Volvo V70XC. Nothing but problems. That being said, our mechanic (who works on nothing but Volvos and is a complete Volvo nerd) hates the AWD models of Volvos and says they're utter shit.

If you don't know if the timing belt has been replaced, it probably hasn't. At that price point, may I suggest any Toyota with a 4 banger?

This is true. My ex had to take her volvo into the shop at least once every other month for this problem -- pretty annoying.

Join a good Volvo Forum and soak up some information on that model. Usually you can figure out pretty quick what the common problems are with a car.
