Not sure what you mean by would a top 5 GM in the league be top 5 in Fantasy football. Fantasy football generally is simply a game of trying to stock up on the most offensive playmakers using a snaking style draft. Then you plug in the guys you drafted into a line up usually consisting of 1 QB, 2 RB's, 2 WR's, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 team Defense. The GM's don't really come into play. There are, of course, different variations of Fantasy Football. You can have different line ups, some leagues use different methods of drafting, some leagues use individual defensive players rather than a team Defense. But no GM's. maybe I'm misunderstanding the question. If not, hope that helps.

What if an NFL GM ran his franchise the same way an FFL GM runs his. Do the same principles apply? Let's say Ozzie Newsome is considered a succesful NFL GM, would he be banned from the FFL because he would just kick everyone's ass every year? I'm just wondering if NFL owners need to start searching the FFL for GM talent in order to be successful in "today's" NFL. Is there another way to score points in the FFL than touchdowns, PATs, FGs and safeties? Dinny |

As far as the GM thing goes, I think you may be thinking that FF is a lot more in depth than it actually is. It's basically just selecting the stars of the NFL in a draft and plugging them into a lineup. The average fantasy guy may be more knowledgeable than the average fan just due on having to know the depth chart for the skill positions of all the NFL teams, or by knowing which defenses are susceptible to the pass or run......but that by no means would qualify them to be an NFL GM. |

I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to fantasy football but it seems to me that most of your questions have been adequately addressed.

I am by no means an expert on modern NFL but here is my worthless take based on observing the league for over 40 years.
I thought the successful franchises had GM's that: 1) Had a vision of how the team should be constructed based on their division, weather, location. 2) Hired a head coach that shared their vision and would manage the team with that style. 3) Had enough social skills to sign draft picks and free agents and not alienate the fans. 4) Did all of this behind the scenes and was able to avoid making himself the focus of the franchise. Or if none of that worked then just go out and draft a stud QB that won lots of games so that people were willing to overlook him being a jerk. In FF you just try to guess who is going to have the best stats and draft those guys. That would not necessarily equate to success in real life. You couldn't afford to have all the good players on one team. The best coaches and GMs in real life would hate FF. They have stat busting players because of the things they did to make it that way. In FF you can't game plan, adjust to the other team, or basically have much input to the outcome of anything except deciding who starts.

Fantasy rewards the numbers that star players put up on a week to week basis. For example, Adrian Peterson can have 10yds rushing through 3.5 qtrs of football and the Vikes could be down 80 points in the game but if he busts an 85yd run for a TD in garbage time, most likely you will win your game that week.
NFL GM success does not equate to Fantasy GM success in the slightest. |
