MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Denver, we have a problem. His name is Patrick Mahomes, the face of the NFL’s future. This young Chiefs quarterback is the biggest thing to hit Kansas City since Arthur Bryant, or at least Len Dawson.

“There’s several guys that could be the face of the NFL,” Mahomes said Sunday, after being named MVP of Kansas City’s rousing comeback that beat San Francisco 31-20 in the Super Bowl. “I just want to be the best Patrick Mahomes I can be.”

Mahomes is not only the NFL’s new above-the-marquee star, he’s the face destined to haunt the Broncos’ nightmares for the next decade.

Super Bowl legends are born from a dream too big to deny.

Seven years ago, way back when Mahomes was a prep quarterback slinging touchdowns for the Whitehouse Wildcats in a tiny Texas town, he shared his fondest football fantasy in the place all the cool kids of the 21st century do: on social media.

“I bet it feels amazing to be the quarterback who says ‘I’m going to Disney World’ after winning the Super Bowl,” Mahomes whispered to the Twitterverse on Feb. 6, 2013.

For better or worse, Twitter never forgets, and the words of an adolescent quarterback can echo forever.

For three quarters of Super Bowl LIV, sweating under the bright lights of the sport’s biggest stage while being squeezed by San Francisco’s fierce defensive pressure, Mahomes looked more like Rex Grossman or Tony Eason than a worthy heir to Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.

And then something magical happened. Mahomes choreographed one of the more remarkable comebacks in Super Bowl history, raising the K.C. offense from the dead, as he engineered three touchdown drives in the final period and delivered the Chiefs their first NFL championship in 50 years.

So many of the best stories of Super Bowl history have been written in the sand of South Florida, from Joe Willie Namath’s brash guarantee to one of those unforgettable comebacks that made Joe Montana forever cool. Hey, isn’t that John Candy?

Right here, among the swaying palms and congested freeways that define greater Miami, where Manning won his first championship ring and John Elway played the final game of his Hall of Fame career.

It was here, during a halftime extravaganza by which all are measured and most fall far short, where Prince played “Purple Rain” in a downpour. Congrats, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. You will have tongues wagging for decades about how you brought the Miami heat.

Seeking to become the youngest player ever to win both the MVP and the Super Bowl, this game was Mahomes’ opportunity to tell Brady and everyone else in the NFL this is his league now.

But in much the same manner Broncos linebacker Von Miller dared to tug on Cam “Superman” Newton’s cape with the whole football world watching four years ago, rookie defensive end Nick Bosa messed with the mojo of Mahomes. His head-scratching interception, a gift collected by linebacker Fred Warner, turned momentum in favor of the Niners, as San Francisco took a 10-point lead into the game’s final 15 minutes.

Through three quarters, Mahomes had a quarterback rating of 62.9, a failing grade by any standard. And then Mahomes magic happened. He was hotter than Shakira, which is really saying something.

In the final period, Mahomes completed 10 of 17 passes for 141 yards, throwing two TD passes on scoring drives that covered 83 and 65 yards, finally taking the lead with only 2 minutes, 44 seconds remaining in the game.

At age 24, Mahomes is just getting warmed up. Welp. Now I’m afraid Broncos Country now knows how the rest of the league felt when most rivals could only wish they had a quarterback as young and dangerous as Elway on their side.

Denver, we have a problem. What on earth can the Broncos do to about Mahomes? You mean other than dream about Tennessee running back Derrick Henry joining the orange and blue as a free agent? Not much, unless you consider begging for mercy a viable option.

The first words out of Mahomes’ mouth, as he stood on the stage of Hard Rock Stadium, with confetti swirling in celebration of the Chiefs’ victory?

“Something,” bellowed the league’s best quarterback, “I wanted to say my whole life: ‘I’m going to Disney World!’”

Mahomes has got the whole NFL world in his hands.
