Deen Castronovo, drummer for the rock band Journey and Salem native, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on accusations of rape, sexual abuse and assault.

The charges against Castronovo, 50, are the result of a Salem police investigation that followed an earlier domestic disturbance arrest at his Salem home.

Castronovo was arrested June 14 following a domestic disturbance call and booked into the Marion County Jail on accusations of three counts of fourth-degree assault, menacing, second-degree criminal mischief, unlawful use of a weapon and coercion. He was released on bail.

Following the investigation, Castronovo was accused of first-degree rape, second-degree sexual abuse and fourth-degree assault. Court records say the alleged crimes occurred June 8, six days before the domestic disturbance arrest.

A Marion County grand jury indicted Castronova on Monday afternoon on the more serious charges and he was arrested that night, court records show. He is held without bail at the Marion County Jail.

On April 15, Castronovo, a South Salem High School graduate, hand-delivered a check for $10,000 to students and staff at South Albany High School. The donation came two weeks after a fire swept through a building at the school, destroying $400,000 of the music department's instruments and equipment.

A post on Journey's Facebook page following his June 14 arrest said drummer Omar Hakim was hired by the band to replace Castronovo during upcoming tour dates.

According to news reports in the Statesman Journal newspaper, Castronovo was arrested in January 2012 on accusations of reckless endangerment, second-degree criminal mischief, interfering with with making a police report and harassment. A neighbor called police after seeing Castronovo arguing with a woman in the street.

As part of a plea, Castronovo was required to take anger management classes and perform 80 hours of community service.
