49ers to acquire OL Laken Tomlinson in trade with Lions
Report: 49ers to acquire OL Laken Tomlinson in trade with Lions
The Lions are giving up on former first-round pick Laken Tomlinson. The San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions have agreed on a trade that will send offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson to the 49ers in exchange for a 5th round draft pick in 2019, per a report from the NFL Network. Tomlinson, 25, gives the 49ers some needed depth and potential on the interior of the offensive line. Tomlinson (6-3, 312) started 24 of 32 games for the Lions over the past two seasons and gives the 49ers another player capable of playing guard and center. The guard position in particular is where Tomlinson might be best suited to help as it's shown this preseason to be an area where the 49ers could use an upgrade. The Lions reached to pick Tomlinson in the first round of the 2015 draft, and he never was consistent in Detroit. The team selected Graham Glasgow in the 2016 draft, and Tomlinson could not beat him out to start last year. This year, he was running behind Glasgow and Joe Dahl. With Greg Robinson on the team and looking like a possible guard once Taylor Decker returns off injury, Tomlinson was expendable. Tomlinson was drafted when Martin Mayhew, who is now a senior personnel executive with the 49ers, was general manager in Detroit. Tomlinson will be joining a competition at guard in San Francisco that includes Zane Beadles, Brandon Fusco, and Joshua Garnett. Max DeMara of Lions 247 contributed to this report. |
