Uhhh, you're in a town of 20 inhabitants at the most, in Kansas, of all places- of course you ain't going to hear a sound.

Anyways, I walked around for a bit, flashing the light over to my car, making sure I knew where I had to run in case shit hit the fan. As I crested the small hill I started feeling sick to stomach. The closer I came to the church I was getting dizzy and decided to sit down on a stone.

That's nothing more than allowing your mind to make things up in anticipation. You've set your mind to already be terribly forgiving of anything it sees and hears.
