Fight Night: Cassel
Tuesday, March 10, 2009
'Fight Night' benefit is a hit Freedom Writers Foundation recipient of $300,000 By DONNA BUNCE The "Dark Knight" poster autographed by Heath Ledger caused a bidding war at "Fight Night 11" on Friday night at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin. The item went to Oakley CEO Scott Olivet for $21,000, and word was that he was prepared to go to $50,000 to get it. The six-bout boxing and kickboxing sanctioned event, which also included a sit-down dinner, introduced the 400 guests to boxing legend "Sugar" Ray Leonard, now a motivational speaker, looking trim and handsome. "I don't miss the hitting," Leonard said of his former life, "but I do miss the camaraderie and the training camps." Other celebrities included former New England Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel, now with the Kansas City Chiefs, and USC quarterback and hot NFL draft choice Mark Sanchez. Delighted Freedom Writers Foundation founder Erin Gruwell, whose foundation was the recipient of the estimated $300,000 net proceeds along with the Marconi Foundation for Kids, won the Labrador retriever puppy in the live auction. |
