The last supper: AFL owner fires entire team during pre-game meal at Olive*Garden
Rick Chandler Mar 12, 2012, 4:43 PM EDT Leave a comment It’s the worst way to find out you’re no longer employed: during unlimited breadsticks at The Olive Garden. Proving that all reviews from that restaurant are not glowing, players for the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League walked out during a pregame meal when told by the owner that they had been fired. It was just hours before the Power was to meet the host Orlando Predators. The league had been unable to come to terms with the players’ union on a salary increase. “I’m putting food in my mouth and being read, from a piece of paper by our owner, that the Pittsburgh Power as a whole is now terminated,” said former Power center Beau Elliott, who played at Highlands High School and Indiana (Pa.). “Mid-statement, all the players got up and left. Every player got up and left while he was still talking. There were 15 to 20 angry, large individuals.” Most players made $400 per game last season, and the league had propsed an increase to $500, while starting quarterbacks would get $1,675 per game. “That is just not acceptable,” AFLPA executive director Ivan Soto said. Soto said he is looking for an $850 increase for all players to $1,350 per game. http://offthebench.nbcsports.com/201...-olive-garden/ |
