What I Saw

There isn’t a way to quantify a loss like that. There isn’t a way to describe it someone, even if they saw it. There is only the experience of having your guts ripped out.

It feels like a fugue state. The sides of your vision get fuzzy, footsteps and breaths feel artificial, forced.

It’s easier to blame particular whipping boys, but I think that is a half-assed analysis.

Here’s what I saw:

I saw an opposing QB sandwich three interceptions around play that is as good as I’ve ever seen from any quarterback. Andrew Luck was absolutely brilliant. That wasn’t just great quarterbacking, it was all-time pantheon quarterbacking.

I saw a wide receiver we didn’t have an answer for, regardless of which corners were in or out of the game.

I saw an artificial surface that should be nuked from orbit. Head injuries on incidental contact like that is somewhat of an aberration, but that many should not happen. I wonder if they replaced the rubber filling with tungsten before the game.

I saw a defense that made a number of excellent plays yet was completely eviscerated. It’s hard to put it all on the D when they gave the offense 17 points via turnovers and won the battle 4-1

I saw an offense score 27 points on its own, and convert another 17 points via turnovers, without its best player for the entirety of the game.

I saw a rookie RB with ball security issues play his ass off as a worthy replacement for our best player.

I saw a quarterback whom many, myself included, derided as a game manager play at a level that no Chiefs QB has in the playoffs in my lifetime. Alex Smith was absolutely magnificent in that game. He did not deserve that loss. He beats almost any QB in history on any day except that QB on that day.

I saw a wide receiver, who is the second best in franchise history and who gets crapped on like he’s Jonny Morton, play a brilliant game.

I saw a free safety who shouldn’t start in the UFL commit the cardinal sin of playing that position.

I saw a head coach whose biggest knack was time management and whose offense was built upon efficiency waste all of its timeouts on offense which turned a 4th and 11 into a 4th and the season.

I saw a head coach go for a field goal at the one yard line when every statistical metric says you go for it. Had they converted, the Chiefs would have won the game. Had they not, they still would have had a chance to win that they had at the game’s end.

But what I didn’t see makes me feel just as shitty.

I feel bad for Jamaal, Bowe, Smith, Hali, and others, but I feel terrible for fans that had to experience that.

Sorry milkman, Reaper, OTW, ChiefsCountry, Flopnuts, Rainman, Bob Dole, and countless hundreds of others that populate this site. You didn’t deserve that experience.

I feel like the football antichrist dragged his carcass from the bowels of Hell to smite us one more time.

I watched a QB DOMINATE a game, clutch throws all over the place, a ridiculous 56% on third down, 378 yards and four touchdowns.

If you wanna quibble with that, welcome to ignore, or atleast my version of it... where I call you an idiot and/or a pussy every time you mention his name in a negative light regarding this game.

44 points should win EVERY playoff game, it just sucks that guys like clay and big cat pussy have something to talk about now... from hero to zero, its pretty sad really.

How does a QB who doesn't lead his team to a TD in the last 25 minutes of a shoot out have a great game? Great first half, sure. Great 60 minutes, no.

For the first time ever on this board, I'm seriously questioning if some of you have ever watched a football game and understood any of what you're watching.

I thought Smith played a great game. He really did. But in the modern NFL, 44 points is apparently not enough.

The question then becomes, what is acceptable quarterback play now? With the rules changes, I think all expectations go out the window. If you're in the playoffs, it takes 50 to win now. In three years it may take 60 when the NFL decides that pass rushers have to start three yards off the line of scrimmage. High scores make the game more marketable.

The other thing I saw was that there's apparently no way to get into Andrew Luck's head. The guy threw three picks and lost a fumble and he didn't get rattled. Weirder still, his team stayed behind him and fought every play until they got back exactly what they needed.

Go, San Diego. Send Luck to New England.

Show me a Chiefs QB that ever played a better playoff game than that, because I don't know of one.

Christ, people are bitching about Bowe after going 8/150/1
I'm not blaming Smith for the loss just pointing out there were a few plays at the end he could have made to win the game.

It's the same ****ing thing with this team every year though. If they just upgrade at X position and fire X coach they will be better.

Truth be told this was the same kind of bullshit performance we would see out of Andy Reids teams in Philly. I don't see how this team is a playoff team next year.

21 years without a playoff victory ****ing sucks.

Given the skeleton crew he was given? Given that without avery and with gray in the backfield, the pass rush destroyed our line? It was a hell of a game. And he made a hell of a pass to close the game that ended up just barely missing. There are a lot of culprits for the loss. How can anyone blame Alex smith?

This is my point. In the end he shit the bed. It not a point of discussion it's an observation.

It starts when he loses his star RB, fastest receiver, and 2nd string back.

Seriously. The loss of Charles doesn't even need explanation. Coaches are furiously going over blocking assignments on the sideline with Davis. They lose Avery and the Colts defense no longer has to worry about the receiver most likely to hurt them deep.

The injuries change the way the Colts defend, the playcalling, and Smiths timing.

If ever there was an excuse for an offense to stall, KC had it today.

I haven't been happy with Hali for awhile now. He's expensive and aging. I'm ready to move on. I want Alex to have the time that Tom Brady and Manning get. I have no more patience with up the middle pass rush and failure to open it up in short yardage situations. A lot of thought is required here on what to do in free agency and in the draft. We are going to need some money. Thanks for the memories Albert and Hali, but we need the money.

Freakin bizzaro world, I watched a defense get torched reminiscent of the Greg Robinson 32 defense. Smith put up those stats without Jamaal Charles, then Avery, then eventually Knile Davis. Smith then makes a good pass on 4th and 11 to Bowe and if Bowe goes limp Chris Carter style then he stays inbounds. Alex Smith did not shit the bed.
