Brandon Flowers done

Quote:
Chiefs released CB Brandon Flowers.
Flowers' performance and usefulness in Kansas City slipped dramatically under new DC Bob Sutton last season, as a press-man scheme was installed in the secondary and Flowers failed to find a fit. He wound up mostly at slot corner, and was beaten relentlessly. The Chiefs were trying to trade Flowers, but found no takers for his contract. Flowers had some of the best years of his career under now-Texans DC Romeo Crennel, and cornerback depth is needed in Houston. We wouldn't be surprised to see them reunite. Flowers turned 28 in February.

Chargers agreed to terms with CB Brandon Flowers on a one-year contract.
The deal is worth "up to" $5 million and contains $3 million in total guarantees. Despite an anemic 2013 season as a misfit in Bob Sutton's press-man scheme, Flowers found a full bushel of suitors after the Chiefs released him 11 days ago. He lands in a spot where he can immediately rehab his value as a starting corner and then hit the open market again at age 29. Flowers put plenty of really good tape together from 2008-12, and will add borderline Pro Bowl shadow ability to a pass defense that ranked 29th in the league last year. With first-round corner Jason Verrett also added to incumbents Shareece Wright and Richard Marshall, this won't be quite the unit to pick on that it was last season.
He's a Charger now.

Why do people insist Flowers isn't a good fit for Sutton's scheme?

Flowers was the only CB on the Chiefs who could play outside, in the slot or shadow an opposing WR. His departure leaves a big hole in the secondary.

Matthieu played both safety and corner. While I'm not a PFF guy, to say the least, if you are, you might wish to note that PFF had Matthieu rated at their #2 CB as of 12/19 last season.

He killed Welker, and he matched up well on Hilton until he got hurt.

Its more business than a game anymore. What do you do? Hate to see him go, but it was kind of inevitable with his contract. Hope Cooper and Gaines are ready to strap it up. No telling what exactly happens with Sean Smith.

Guess we could always see what Stanford Routt is up to right now? j/k

Pass rush. Pass rush. Pass rush. Unless you've got absolutely ELITE corners, I'll take my chances with a consistent pass rush from the front six or seven and competent tackling.

Especially with how ****ing much a joke the rules are these days. "Oh, #28, you went stride for stride with a WR and you both kind of slapped each other along the way? PASS INTERFERENCE, on the defense!"

Get after the QB, and be able to tackle as soon as the opposing receiver makes the catch to prevent YAC.

If they are moving to bump coverage then Flowers don't fit.

Don't worry guys, our pass rush is going to be so ****ing fierce that whoever is back there will only need to cover for about 1.5 seconds.
