That doesn't really matter though.

Using a stat to justify QB play in which the QB can throw for 125 yards, 2 picks and no TDs, yet still get credit for, is crap.

The Chiefs a team where all of the elite talent of the team is built around the defense, struggled when its two best players on defense went down with injuries, leaving a average qb to try to gun sling with better qbs, who have better talent around them.

Its just the way it is.

I mean, look at it this way.

Peyton Manning is throwing to Demaryus, Molly Welker, Eric Decker, Julius Thomas.

Alex Smith is throwing to
Anthony Fasano, Dex McCluster, Dwayne Bowe, and Donny Avery.



Hardly seems fair.

As much as people want to knock the weapons around Smith, he doesn't do them any favors either.

He's a cerebral guy, to a fault and it hurts his timing. Times when he just lets it go, are times taht he plays well. He just doesn't do it enough because he's so afraid of turning it over.

Turn overs do hurt, but I don't think its any coincidence that our own head Coach has talked about how he wants him to be more aggressive.

He will be this year. I think he was in the preseason, and it led to some uncharacteristic picks for him

1 was, where he's trying to fit into a tight window (he was late with the throw though)

I like Smith but unless he can start becoming more aggressive he isn't going to be anything more than average..I would like to see him get some better targets to throw to but unless he plays more aggressive it will be a waste

If Bowe plays like some people here are hoping, JC stays healthy, Kelce takes off, and the other WR step up at least some..aling with Smith becoming more aggressive I think the team will do pretty good..as long as the line can hold a pocket for a few seconds

But I am not holding my breath

Alex does better when he doesn't "think" or over analyze. Just react. But he is constantly thinking and it gets in the way of his just playing. You can see times when he is just reacting and he does better than when he tries to think too hard.

And that is what you have -- a very good quarterback who will rarely hurt your team or cost you games, who will execute for his playmakers, and the more playmakers he has to distribute the ball to, the further you will go in the playoffs. But his lack of killer instinct and his risk aversion will keep him from, like you said, being anything more than average among the 32 starting NFL quarterbacks.

You could do a lot worse, but you aren't going to have an elite/near elite QB -- the kind who have won every super bowl since Brad Johnson 10 years ago.
