We were 1 point faves and are pretty close in Pomeroy. That wasn't much of an upset today.

Archie Goodwin was supposed to be a phenom. Instead he left school early to barely be a first rounder, and has rode the bench. It happens. |

Need OU to step up tomorrow night and Kansas needs to take care of business at home. That embarrassing performance and coaching clinic put on by Travis ford didnt do Kansas any favors yesterday.

Free Cliff
I've written about this twice already, but it's such a big storyline that it's worth going over again. Kansas coach Bill Self giving more minutes to Jamari Traylor over Cliff Alexander is puzzling at the least and even more head-scratching when comparing the two statistically. The Jayhawks' 67-62 loss to Oklahoma State was another example. In the first half, Traylor played 13 minutes had four points on 1-for-4 shooting with five rebounds and three turnovers in 13 minutes. Alexander, meanwhile, had eight points on 4-for-4 shooting with four rebounds and one turnover in 12 minutes. Alexander, clearly, was KU's better player in the first half as the Jayhawks built an 11-point lead. In the second half, Self played Traylor 10 minutes and Alexander four. Traylor also was in during the game's most important minutes, surrendering a turnover — his sixth of the game — that turned into an Anthony Hickey layup and doubled OSU's lead from two to four with 2:32 left. So what is it that Self is seeing that has him put Traylor on the court while limiting Alexander to the bench? At this point, I'm not sure. Here's how the two match up statistically in 20 different measures. These numbers aren't close. Alexander is a better shooter, rebounder, shot-blocker, ballhandler, contact creator and shot-blocker than Traylor while fouling less often. I figured maybe Traylor had been playing better lately. That hasn't been the case either. I understand that stats don't tell us everything about basketball. I get that we can't fully quantify energy plays or good rotation rebounding, and that there's some part of evaluation that has to be outside the numbers. Having said that, I feel safe in saying there are no amount of intangibles that can make up for this difference statistically. Traylor is one of my favorite people to talk to and a great kid who has overcome a lot of obstacles, but this isn't about that for Self; it's about getting the best players on the court so they can produce and give the team the best chance at winning, both now and in the future. Self did address Alexander's role at his weekly press conference last week, as he was asked if the big man had hit a freshman wall. "I don't think he's hit a wall by any stretch, but he hasn't scored the ball as much lately," Self said. "But if you look at how he scored in other games it's off of penetration. It's not off of catching the ball in the post and making post moves or scoring over people as much as it is dropoffs and offensive rebounds and transitions. So I think Cliff's doing fine. "We can say his minutes are down, maybe down two minutes a game or three minutes a game or whatnot. But we've had some guys step up." Self is right in saying Alexander isn't perfect. He's not great scoring with his back to the basket. He sometimes messes up plays. He can get lost defensively. From a big-picture perspective, though, all that shouldn't matter. KU has been a better team when Alexander is on the court, especially when he is in there alongside Perry Ellis. It's time for Self to give his freshman big a longer leash — both for his team now and also to help its potential ceiling in postseason play. Most outstanding Jayhawk vs. Oklahoma State: Brannen Greene Stat of the day: Kansas made 11 of 33 2-pointers against Oklahoma State, continuing a season-long issue of making inside shots. If you look at the last five seasons, four of the Jayhawks' worst seven 2-point performances have come with this team. http://cjon.co/1EQiLMk

You must have a more developed set of eyeballs than I since they're scoring 1 bucket less per game than we are (72.1/per vs 70.3)

Does Self ever get asked questions and give real answers or have Div 1 coaches all gone Belicheck?

He's actually the most candid coach I've ever heard speak. I mean he's not telling Holly Rowe about technical stuff in his 30 seconds. But if you listen to press conferences and coaches shows he's really candid.

Kansas cant beat the press...its like they forget to even know how to inbound the ball and get the ball up court. 1 error after another after another...the whole entire offense breaks down.

Have absolutely no idea what that has to do with their extremely slow tempo (289 out of 351 teams). You can be a good offensive team and still be horrible to watch when you play that slow (look no further than Virginia).

The gap with KU is 4 possessions per game. 1 every ten minutes of play. I think you're basing your opinion of their style on that awful first game they played vs us.
