Car Care and Detailing Thread
Others mentioned I should start this thread in my other thread. And while I won't have the new car for a while, I'd like to hear some thoughts and recommendations so I can have most of it on hand before the car shows up. My other thread had a lot of great posts in it and you guys have been a big help.
While black cars looks great clean, keeping it relatively clean in Phoenix might be the death of me. But I'll sure as shit give it my best shot. I actually like cleaning and waxing our current cars but it's not like I am being meticulous about it. I've never had a car with rims either and I know those can get dirty quick. I've never owned a dark colored car and I've never had a car with leather. I plan to take really good care of this car and would like some tips on doing so. But I'm just a ****ing n00b. I'll throw some links out from Amazon as I mention things. Some of the things already on my list are: 1. Not sure if everyone recommends ![]() http://www.amazon.com/Mothers-Genuin...wool+wash+mitt 2. Grit guard and two wash buckets. One for rinse and one for soap/water. http://www.amazon.com/Mothers-Genuin...wool+wash+mitt 3. Waffle Weave Drying towel. There are tons of towels out there but this seems to be able to take up a lot of water. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001Q8DMA0/...I21164SXVV1AWB 4. Car Wash http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009IQXFO/...b_recs_2_title Some mention that after washing you should use a paint cleanser before waxing. But wondering if washing then clay baring is sufficient prior to wax? I've seen this P21S Paintwork Cleanser mentioned on a few reads. Looks like good use for water spots and swirls prior to waxing if needed. Not sure if you would do entire car first or just use it for bad spots before waxing? http://www.amazon.com/P21S-12350B-Pa...twork+Cleanser Also, a company called Zaino has great reviews and recommendations. They have a package that looks like it includes all products I'd need together including wash, polish, wax, leather and tire care. http://www.zainostore.com/mm5/mercha...y_Code=prokits I do not have a polisher and would need to get one of those as well but not sure where to start on that front. Can't wait to see what you guys have tried and recommend. |

I'm getting a procedure done on my car that I'll never have to wax it again. Just wash it once a month at least, to not let the dirt and road grime get a chance to hack away at the sealant. I'm picking it up tomorrow. Gary Dean asked permission and says he is going to post a video of the process on his popular youtube channel. I'll post it here when it goes up.

They say you don't need to wax the Opti-Gloss that Bearcat and I put on either. Good for roughly two years, likely increased years for cars that are garaged as well. |

He says never wax again, ever. I just trusted the guy based on his extensive and honorable reputation.

But please, do please wash that car more than once a month. Please! Especially un-garaged with all that Florida rain. |

People are posting status updates on their cars on Facebook, twitter, car boards that their cars are in the Chicago, Nashville, Las Vegas rail yards on the way to their dealer. Pretty normal, correct? What is happening is that people are breaking into the rail yards and stealing the SCAT Pack Shakers. Why? Because they are being sold in Latin America for $100K. They have not caught anyone yet but they think its Latino gangs and drug dealers are the customers. They have no concerns about the VIN#'s on all the parts. 4 cars have been stolen out of rail yards so far.

I did track my car from Bremerhaven to Southampton and across the Atlantic to Baltimore while it was on a ship named Courage.... OTOH, I don't think there was a risk of it being stolen and showing up somewhere in Mexico.

This is the recap video. Not the video from start to finish that Gary will put up on Youtube but he tells you what he put on the car. Sorry no embedding yet.

Are old school bras the dumbest things? Need some opinions.
Wife has a 2014 Volvo S60, white. When we got it last year I vowed to take good care of the paint, fast forward 16 months and I'm addressing that vow finally. Washed it on Wed night and wasn't happy with the results so last night I clayed, washed, and waxed it. It looks really good now, closest to brand new it will ever look again. So I got a clear bra quote and it will be close to $1,000 after all is said and done. I can't do it, not to disparage anyone else who made that investment, I just can't. For $40 I can get a "custom" bra that will protect the paint as well or better then the clear bra. It completely changes the aesthetics of the car in a negative way, but is it worth it for brand new looking paint 5-10 yrs? And if she plans on driving it into the ground is it even worth it? Just wondering how others feel b/c I've never had one and I put a shit load of work into the car the last 2 nights getting it up to par and I'd like to preserve it, but at what cost? You're right. All the moisture they trap isn't good and more importantly the dirt that gets trapped under them combined with movement will work like sand paper on the paint. I messed up a hood several years ago by using one of them.

And this is why I love Chemical guys stuff. I haven't waxed in almost a year and the car was dirty.
Edit: Obviously, I'm referring to the non-destroyed spots. |
