Over the years and already in the last week, I've heard numerous people (Seth Davis, Bilas, DeCourcy to name a few) mention that people will falsely judge conferences on NCAA tournament success. Six games is not > 30+ regular season games.

When I was younger I used to be like this. Until I understood CBB more anyway. And to the people that just tune in for March it's a common misjudgment. People are obsessed with titles and them being the above-all statistic. True to a degree, but CBB is a different animal because of the format. Hell, in what other sport is making the semis a coveted feat? College hockey I think (forgive me I don't follow hockey). Do we get celebrated at our jobs for being in the top four of the employee of the month ballet? No. The Final Four in CBB is so ****ing hard to achieve for obvious reasons most of us know. Like Bearcat, now I just sit back and enjoy the ride and hope we get some good fortune and try to make some of our own as well.

Even if that was in any way relevant to the Big 12's quality in 2015-2016 (and it isn't), that's still a minute sample size in comparison to a full season of games.

That's not necessarily fair. Teams change mostly year to year. Now if the league was compiled of a bunch of Perry Ellis' or nontraditional students that stay for 10 years I'd agree (rim shot).

When the best teams in the country have little more than a 10% chance of winning it all each year, it's a pretty random format. Makes for some great entertainment, though (especially for outsiders/casuals).

Just imagine how different it would be if college basketball championships were awarded in the same way college football was.

Just imagine how different it would be if college basketball championships were awarded in the same way college football was.

KU, Duke, UNC and UK's national title numbers combined would be off the map if that happened lol. It would be blue bloods just alternating national titles with occasional upsets. Casual fans would be bored and pissed likely.

It's funny to me. The NCAA tourney clearly isn't designed so that the best team in the country wins a national championship each year. It's designed for excitement & upsets - which it provides. Rarely does the best team in the country win it, let alone make the Final Four. Yet, there are people that consider that the end all achievement of what makes a season good.

College hockey only starts with 16 teams, so while the team I follow raised a banner for making it to the Frozen Four last year (and losing in the semifinal), I think overall it's more of an attempt to market the event than to say it was some huge accomplishment to get there.

I've always viewed college sports differently. It's one thing to demand success from millionaires, but I've just never seen it that way when it comes to college kids.

As far as the sample size, it would be more interesting to see conference ranks at the end of the regular season along side tournament success... and by tournament success, teams playing to or beyond their seed. Even then, it can be a mess... was the Big East awesome for getting all those teams in 2011, with a 9-9 UConn winning it all, even if #1 Pitt lost to #8, and #6 St John's and #6 Georgetown lost in the first round to an 11, and #2 Notre Dame lost to a 10... but, they won the NC?

Yeah I don't get pissed at all when KU loses in the dance anymore for what Plow said and you're reasoning above as well. Rarely best team wins. It's fun, though. It's...madness lol.

People make the same mistake with baseball and football regular seasons. Especially new Royals fans. Won the Central by a billion miles, WS champs and you'll find much more 'sky is falling' on social media from April to September last year (a little scare against the Astros there lol) than joy from November 1st onward. I know some of that is cynical thinking but it does apply for the previous sadly lol. Baseball season is lifetime compared to the NFL. But some it is what it is.

By the way, If what Landen Lucas has become for KU doesn't get every big in the country wanting to come to Lawrence to play for Self, then you're crazy kids. Can't comprehend what has happened with him. Awesome job by Self and his staff to get him to this.
